“Great Family Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

We came here with our two young boys for a weekend away and we really enjoyed our stay.
Unfortunately our check in took a little while as they had to find our booking that we made on a travel website. But on the plus side Brendan ( who you could tell loved his job) was really friendly and gave us drink vouchers because of our wait.
Our room was lovely and the beds were really comfy and it was nice to have a selection of different pillows on the beds. Having a fridge was also handy. The bathroom was a good size and had a bath and the toiletries were nice.
Having Sky TV was great especially the kids channels.
The pool was great and was a hit with the kids while the heated spa pools were a hit with Mum and Dad. The Gym was well equipped for a basic workout however the machines could do with a service.
Parking was good and it was great being next to the Thermal Parks and having the Sulphar smell was also a plus for us as it said Rotorua.
We will definitely be back.

I stayed here over the Easter Holiday for a couple of nights with my family which includes two very young children so we all stayed in a twin queen room. There was ample space for the two nights and we had an awesome view looking over the thermal parks.

The beds were a little soft for my liking but everyone has their own preferences. The room was pretty clean although there were still a few hairs that I found in the bath, and the bathroom is starting to look a little tired.

We used the restaurant area for one breakfast and they had a great selection of food to cater for all.

One of the best bits was the pool which is thermally heated - it's like swimming in the bath, and there's a large shallow area near the steps to get in where my young kids could splash around freely in.

It is located slightly out of the centre but there's a free bus service and most people seemed to have cars.

I would definitely stay here again if I return to Rotorua.

Room Tip: Try and get a view overlooking the thermal area

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights 14th - 17th April 2014. The best thing by far about the hotel is the restaurant. The breakfast is fantastic like others have commented; they cater for both Eastern and Western palates! The Eastern section changed every morning. Even the omelettes and poached eggs are cooked to order the way you want it. Restaurant staff is generally very attentive too.

Dinner in the restaurant is an experience. We tried the buffet dinner; there was ample selection and loads of seafood selection - and all at a very reasonable price when compared with the restaurants in town. The executive chef, Sangit, well he is beyond good and accommodating to us. He came round to introduce himself and to check we are having a good time there. Before we even committed ourselves to eating there he took us round the restaurant and introducing all the dishes in the buffet and even came round to sit with us for a while after dinner to check we have enjoyed our meal and take in our comments. Well done Sanjit.

But the hotel itself is something else though. Especially being a member of the IGH Reward scheme, we were very disappointed with the room we were allocated. The checkin desk sold it as though it is the better type of room by saying we have been given a room in the new block. The corridor had a constant smell of sulphur which does not seem to clear any time of the day. Luckily the smell did not permeate into the room. But the room itself was of such poor quality. The bathroom door does not shut properly, wardrobe door was hanging loose from the roller door, bed was uncomfortable sinking into the middle and you can hear the noise from all around. Even the bed itself was pushed so much to the edge of the wall my wife had to clamber over me to get in and out of the bed. When you shower, the open shower room cause the whole bathroom to get wet. Only when we complained after the second night were we given a much better room in the old block. There is no smelly corridor, wardrobe works, there is a proper bath and the bed is so much more comfortable. Even the scenery from the window is so much better. So beware, new block does not mean better. Totally disappointed with the room until we complained!!!

Dear Douglas L,

Thank you for choosing to stay at Holiday Inn Rotorua recently and for taking the time to comment on Trip Advisor.

It is disappointing to read that your room was not presented to an acceptable standard, and I am pleased that you brought this to the attention of our staff. It is good to know that you found the alternate room that was allocated to you to be much more suitable.

Being located next to the geothermal reserve, we do at times receive the smell of sulphur entering the hotel. Certain atmospheric conditions bring this about, and thankfully it does not occur often, and is rarely detectable within our guest rooms.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your restaurant experience with us, and thank you for making special mention of our Sous Chef, Sanjit – we will ensure he is recognised appropriately.

Thank you again for your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back the next time you travel our way.

Kind regards,
Kent Breeze

Clean,spacious,uncluttered,large rooms,well appointed,friendly staff
The hot pools are clean and well maintained ,good room service and bar snack menu
Holiday Inn took over from the Heritage chain and seem to employ more staff with a rise in service levels
Of the big chain hotels, this one is the best

The pros:
1) Staff service
2) Complimentary drop off at the city centre
3) Restaurant was pretty good as well
4) Right besides the thermal reserves - so make sure you request a room facing them as its an amazing view.

The Cons:
1) The bed sizes - had booked a queen size and it was more off a double - maybe slightly bigger than than double. So would recommend the booking the king rooms if you dont need to fight for your space at night.
2) Air Con wasnt working in my room - so the staff promptly moved us to a king size room on level 3.
3) Little dated
4) Around 4kms from the city centre so if you have your own transport then it wont matter.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the geysers

We checked in late evening and had to rush out to dinner. ON coming back in after midnight the staff at the front desk greeted us by name. The rooms were clean and very good value. The pillow menu and beds were incredibly comfortable - as good as anywhere we have stayed (with higher stars) internationally.
We will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Its a wee walk to some of the rooms - ask to be closer to reception.

Third stay here, and everything pretty good. Comfortable well appointed rooms, good quality linens. Restaurant and bar very good, delicious buffet with a good range of choices. Staff lovely.

Outdoor pool & spas fantastic.

Some areas getting a bit tired - the lifts very old, and the bathrooms need a wee freshen up.
