A good way to experience the geothermal area and appeared to be less touristy than other options. Well maintained paths. The Lady Knox Geyser is forced to "blow" using soap but at least you get to see it.

Our day began with a short drive from Rotorua to Wai-o-tapu arriving about 9:40 am so we could see the once a day geyser display. This is not Old Faithful so keep your expectations low but we did enjoy the guide's explanation of the discovery of the area and how he could make the geyser "perform on demand." Then we drove back to the visitor center to begin our hike. There are 3 color coded walks which we completed in a little over an hour. The colors are amazing and those who have done some reading about geothermal phenomena will be well rewarded. After lunch at the cafe we drove to Hells Gates and immersed ourselves in the sulfuric mud (only 20 min. is allowed.) Bathing suits are required for the public areas. Then we did a shower and soaked in the clear, warm sulfuric water. This was followed by another shower. Bring your own towel, soap, and shampoo. Mud and other toiletries are available in the gift shop. All in all it was a fun day full of exercise, information, and relaxation. We were back in Rotorua by 4 pm.

An easy walk and on a sunny day the colours look so vibrant. If you've never been in a place like this, you must go and see for yourself!

Wonderful walk which at a leisurely pace takes approximately 90 minutes. The track is beautifully maintained.

What a beautiful park! Lot's of variety in the different thermal sights, with all colors you can imagine. The walking track is suited for everyone, including my mother of 83. The total walk is less then 4 km, and if you should have time enough to really enjoy every natural wonder in the park. The true highlight on the northern island.
