Owner description: "One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World" Trip Advisor THOUSANDS OF YEARS IN THE MAKING, explore spectacular nature at New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic area. Walk at your own pace - view the unique Champagne Pool, Sinter Terrace formations, Steaming Ground, Bubbling Mud, Expansive Vistas, Huge Volcanic Craters. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10.15am. Excellent facilities at modern Visitor Centre.

We arrived to see Lady Knox go off at 10:15. While I'm sure it would still be impressive to a first-time viewer, having seen Strokkur (Iceland) spontaneously erupt, this was a little bit of a disappointment. The park walk, however, is a spectacular array of different colours, smells and sensations... Definitely worth visiting!

I enjoyed my visit to Wai-o-tapu with its variety of thermal mud pools, different coloured lakes and even some wild-life. I didn't rush to see the geyser go off, having seen Old Faithful in Yellowstone park. Pools vary greatly but geysers are much the same. According to the acidity the pools vary in colour and different coloured lichens grow. Some of these are not too acidic, as I saw bird standing them. This park is similar to Yellowstone [USA] but on a much smaller scale. For some variety, not far away, I suggest visiting Tokaanu thermal pools/walk as the walk has some different volcanic scenery. The place I though twas best for colour and scenery was Orakei Korako........also not far.

If you are strapped for time don't bother too much with the Geyser, it is man made and set off with powder, but to wander around the lakes was an amazing experience.

A great natural attraction. The park is well signposted enabling you to chose how far you would like explore and which areas are suitable for those with prams. A good explanation and historical description of the Lady Knox Geiser was given prior to the regular 10:15 eruption.

Thought this place was fab. All sorts of eerie natural phenomenon to see and feel. The hot steam billowing around you, moody misty steam rising from everywhere. Pools of all colours and all set in nature. Was a brilliant stop and worth the money as I was there almost 3 hours.
