Owner description: "One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World" Trip Advisor THOUSANDS OF YEARS IN THE MAKING, explore spectacular nature at New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic area. Walk at your own pace - view the unique Champagne Pool, Sinter Terrace formations, Steaming Ground, Bubbling Mud, Expansive Vistas, Huge Volcanic Craters. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10.15am. Excellent facilities at modern Visitor Centre.

We enjoyed our visit here - the Lady Knox Geyser was impressive to see, although we were a little disappointed that the eruption had to be set off using washing powder, but understandable, as that was the only way to reliably cause it to happen every day! You could choose different lengths of walks around the rest of the park - we chose the longest route and enjoyed seeing the different pools, of amazing natural colour! The champagne pool was hard to see properly though because of the steam, I don't know if that's because it was a cool day and had been raining a little. Overall, definitely worth a visit

I have never been to anywhere like this before and whilst I accept there may be other places similar in the vicinity, we spent a really interesting few hours here.
As we arrived at the car park on our way from Taupo to Rotorua there was a guide there telling us we should head straight to the geyser as it was due to go any minute. We headed straight there and parked up but were met by a flood of people heading back to their cars - we had missed it. That said, it was still expelling water/gas and was a great sight even though we hadn't seen it at its highest. We then headed (by car) to the mud pools which were intriguing. We found ourselves staring at the same spot watching the mud bubble for ages.
When we managed to tear ourselves away from the bubbling mud we went back to the main centre and paid to go in (you're supposed to pay before going to the geyser and mud pools but as we had been directed straight to the geyser we hadn't.)
The provided map was easy to follow and the route clearly marked. There are easier routes that miss out some of the spots of interest but we did the longest route to make sure we saw everything. There are steps and hills but they are clearly marked on the map to allow you to make your choice as to which routes to follow.
We loved it and were amazed time and again at what nature can do - there really is nothing so beautiful as nature. It is also amazing that humans choose to live so close to such volatile unknown underground conditions....

We went with our 2 young children. It was reasonably priced and had a number of different lengths of walks you could do. We did the long 75 minute walk which the kids managed well. It was very beautiful and amazing seeing the geyser and all the different types of hot pools. The kids really enjoyed it and was very interesting and educational. Would definitely recommend. Fantastic memories for the kids and us parents - seeing the bubbling mud and the hot steam was truly a unique experience.

My son aged 11 and I went Youth hosteling around NZ for 3 weeks.
These were the second thermal springs we saw.
They were impressive.
The trip is possibly the best adventure ai ever did with my son.
Treasured memories.
I highly recommend it

A really interesting talk was given at the geyser and the walk around the park with all the different pools was the best part. A truly authentic experience. The geyser itself, with the guide making it "go off", was quite disappointing as were the other tourists who pushed and stood in front. There was no crowd control at the geyser. We had a great time everywhere else there though.
