A great full day visit which offers you a brilliant view of something very rare and special. While we visited when the weather was not at its best so the colours of the pools were not very vivid as they are in summer, it was nevertheless a great day.

“Absolutely gorgeous!”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

Wai-o-Tapu was one of the our favorite stops during our trip to New Zealand. The different geothermal pools are absolutely stunning! The colors are simply amazing- neon yellow, aqua blue, rust orange- and the variety of different natural features is quite impressive. The paths through the park are easily navigable and each area is clearly marked for cross-reference on the maps that you receive upon entry. The Lady Knox Geyser is a short drive from the main park. It erupts at 10:15 every morning and puts on a very nice show. The park is definitely a wonderland that is not to be missed.

“Wonderful, even in the pouring rain!”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

The actual park (that you pay to go into) is beautiful, nice paths to follow on your self guided tour. We went fairly early in the day, with pouring rain. The staff were kind in letting us know what areas might be a bit flooded out, which paths to be cautious on and other helpful information. If you can, I would avoid it in this weather, but if you only have the one chance to visit, go anyways, still totally worth it. Mother nature creates some beautiful colours, smells and sights.

There are also some mud pools about 5 mins drive from the park, which are free to visit, but it is just a quick little peak at some boiling mud pools, with a little path walk around the area.

Let's address the complaints that the Lady Knox Geyser "isn't natural", this isn't exactly correct, the geyser itself is natural, and the story behind its discovery, naming and it's current day eruptions, etc, are very interesting. Yes, the eruption is helped along by a guide, but this is due to the fact that otherwise it would be a rather unpredictable eruption pattern, by doing what they do, they are helping to relieve some pressure, as well as create a fun and interesting tourist attraction. They are helping along what would naturally occur anyways. Very interesting!

“Stinky fun”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

This had some amazing sights, especially the Lady Knox Gyser and the Mud Pools. Kids got a bit tired of walking, and things fairly spread out.
