I stayed in funky green for a week in NZ summer time. The place is calm with a very good atmosphere, clean, and well-decorated. It's walking distances to every places of interest in Rotorua which is a good point. The seasonal staff is very nice and helpful. The kitchen is spacious and you can buy eggs and beers directly by lefting coins, pretty cool when you're too lazy to reach supermarket or when it's late. Prices for the room are a bit expensive and you want to use Wi-fi it's better to reach McDonalds, you'll save a lot of money. BUT the really bad thing about this backpackers is the owner Gerard : Acting cool and helpful the 5 first minutess you talk with him, as soon as you pay you understand what king of person he really his: Incredibly rude, arrogant, as well as racist. He doesn't hesitate rushing into the dorm waking you up at 7:00 asking to "clear out cause he need the dorm for a group of persons", taking all your belongings without minding to put them in another room, humiliating people, the worst being mocking at the asian accent of one of his staff as hard as he maked her cry, paying her less than other employees for a larger amount of work-time as he pays them cash-in-hand. In summary a very good backpackers but try to avoid the owner if you book there

Loved this place! Felt really welcomed and Gerard gave me some great ideas for things to do in the short time I was there. Warm fire at night and good, clean facilities. Really personal place to stay, good for the independent traveller.

Very cozy hostel at a good location in Rotorua - about 20 minutes walk to Lake Rotorua and most of the restaurants in the city, and just 5 minutes away from a huge supermarket. Catherine (hope I got the spelling right!) from the reception was very friendly and helpful. We were pleasantly surprised when we received 20mb of free internet each (about an hour's surfing) upon arrival. The internet was really fast as well. Stayed in a twin room, it was clean and very nice. Kitchen was nice, shared bathroom was clean, and the common area had a nice warm fireplace. My only complaint is that it was really cold in the room, not sure whether it's because of the exceptionally cold winter Rotorua's been having or the weak radiator in the room. Woke up in the middle of the night during the first night because of the cold but used the extra blanket they had in the room for the second night and slept very well.

Together with my girlfriend, we stayed at this lovely and very well located backpacker in Rotorua. After a pleasant first night we even decided to prolong our stay, not only because there is so much to do in Rotorua, but also because we really liked this place. Friendly staff, tidy and clean facilities, spacious rooms, good location to city center, parking space available and reasonable price.
