“Unless you want to book the entire hotel - don't have your wedding here!”
Reviewed 13 March 2010

The Duxton Hotel is certainly surrounded by stunning scenery but unless you are prepared to pay for all 44 rooms at $249 per room, I suggest you don't book this place for a wedding. Whatever happened to what the customer wants? I was told by the lady who showed us around that if we wanted to have our wedding at the Duxton, that we would have to book the entire hotel - all 44 rooms! I was told the reason why we had to book the entire hotel was because they only have the one main conference room that also doubles up as the breakfast/lunch/dining room for guests and there was no where else to move other paying guests! Oh well, found somewhere much more stunning and, what's even better, I don't have to book 44 rooms to have a wedding there!!

Looks may be deceiving from the moment you drive through the main entrance. Set in a weatherboarded lodge type building and on the serene lake edge our stay was enjoyable. We booked into the superior lake view room which was very spacious with a seperate lounge and balcony with a view to die for. The bathrooms were clean and spacious as well with a seperate bath tub and shower. The quality of the meals (dinner and breakfast) were expected with a 4 star plus hotel and the service from their friendly staff always ensured that you were looked after. There was a conference on at the same time we stayed but we hardly noticed them around. Great facilities and would definitely return for some rest and relaxation.

This hotel had very mixed reviews on Tripadvisor so I was rather concerned.
The hotel is a few miles out of Rotorua in a beautiful setting overlooking the lakes and away from the smells! We had a garden room which had a beautiful view and was away from the noise of the road. The room was extremely comfortable; we were able to borrow cutlery ,plates etc to eat a meal in our room. The restaurant served lovely food and the service was excellent.
The hotel is now owned by a Thai businessman and this is reflected in the decor.
My only criticism ,which applies to all New Zealand hotels, is that employees lack training in hospitality.

Cost of taxi to Rotorua $50 one way. Local shuttle overbooked on weekend, so could not use ($30).They do take credit cards which helps. You really need a car to stay here. Weird layout of bathroom: open shutters to bedroom allowing you to enjoy view of outdoors, and for anyone in your room to see you in the bathroom! Grounds need sprucing up; potted colorful plants would help a lot. More geared towards young families with cars. Good food, but expensive. Dead bar!

With our family and a large group of friends to spend the new year's eve in Rotorua. A 15-20 drive to the main area of Rotorua. The hotel is set right on the lake front and it is a lovely setting. There are limited water sports, 1 restaurant/bar, pool (heat pump broken so it was freezing), spa and garden areas.
We found the bar/restaurant area very disappointing for choice for food and lack of service was the general opinion in our group. There was no new year eves functions planned. When we arrived at the bar - there was no service and when we did get the staff to get a drink they dissappeared just a quickly - leaving us feeling like an intrusion.
There is no air conditioning in the small rooms. They are well designed though and most rooms have a view of the lake. The rooms are clean & quiet - no overally modern but adequate.

A spur of the moment getaway with my husband saw us book two nights at the Duxton and we were absolutely delighted with our choice. Lovely, serene setting (even in the middle of NZ winter) on the shores of Lake Rotoiti. The rooms were extremely clean, well appointed and warm. Loved the bathroom with cosy underfloor heating, deep bath for luxuriating in piping hot water whilst sipping a lovely chilled glass of wine. We eat at the restaurant for dinner and were pleasantly surprised at the value for money (comparable to Auckland prices) and the food was exquisite. After dinner we relaxed on large leather sofas in front of a roaring fire set in a riverstone wall. Breakfast was also great and although seemly expensive (at NZD27) for a cooked breakfast, this did include the continental selection of cereals, fruits, pastries, yoghurts, cheeses and small goods as well which my husband was delighted with. The staff were friendly, helpful and unintrusive. I would thoroughly recommend coming here if you dont' mind being 15mins out of the 'hustle and bustle' of downtown Rotorua.

We had a lovely night at the Duxton. The room was great, we were upgraded on arrival which was a fantastic. Staff were friendly. The meal that we had booked as part of the package was excellent, the view over the lake very pretty, the open fire in the restaurant welcoming, breakfast the follwoing morning also part of the package was great. The hotel was very quiet, we were there on a Sunday night. Being a little out of Rotorua it escapes the distictive smells of the area. Highly recommended.
