Although a bit pricey, the stay was well worth it. It was like being on a second honeymoon. The grounds, lodge, and our room were beautiful. The food was great and the service was impeccable. There was so much to do onsite and the staff went well above and beyond to help with everything including activities onsite as well as in the surrounding area.

Stayed in a Villa which was superb, It had all the extras and there was nothing one could have wanted for.
The service we received throughout our stay could not be faulted.
Lots of activities are available. The trails are all well signposted and excellant maps are available. Make sure to take your camera - the views are stunning.

My wife and I stayed at Treetops for the first three nights of our honeymoon, before continuing on to the Cook Islands. From the moment we arrived, we knew Treetops was a special place.

First, the service was outstanding. John, the general manager, welcomed us outside the resort upon arrival, and immediately made us feel at home. Rarely do you find a place where the majority of the staff know you by first name, which was the case here. The entire staff went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves.

Second, our villa and the main building are stunning. The main building is very bright, and each room has a very different feel, giving it plenty of character. Each day breakfast and dinner were both held in the main building. Our room, a "forest villa" was great... quite large and luxurious. Very comfortable bed, amazing bathroom, and great view from our patio. Just a 2-3 minute walk to the main building.

Last, but not least, the resort grounds are fabulous. Treetops is set upon 2,500 acres of natural beauty. There are plenty of hiking trails, places to kayak, hunting is possible (though we aren't hunters), among many other activities. There are a number of animals to be seen, such as various species of deer, ram, sheep, water buffalo, pheasant, among others.

While we were there, we booked a number of activities, all of which are highly recommended... the 4WD photo safari, the Maori Food Trail, and the helicopter ride to White Island.

To summarize, Treetops is not easy on the wallet, but it is completely worth the money. We had an absolutely wonderful time, and while we are 9,000 miles away, we will plan to revisit at some point! Highly recommended.

Great for people who aim to be experienced hunters and fishermen (with lots of money), Ideal for walking and hiking and helicopter excusrions ( White island is a must!!!)

Great rooms, unfortunataly we got one without any view which was against our request. Not any word of excuse!! Therfore one point minus.

Other guests told us the food was great so was the breakfast.

The best thing is the helicopter pad, you need it because it is very remote. Do not try to arrive in the darkness (car or heli) you'll have problems finding the spot.

We have not seen any Spaa ore Pool (so check before you book)

You must have a car to stay here - it is remote, which is part of the appeal - and they don't really provide shuttles to anywhere. They have their own helicopter and landing pad; they offer their own tours as well. Fishing, hunting, food safaris, trips to the Thermal Areas - all offered for various fees. Don't stay in a lodge suite - upgrade to the villas for the view. It is worth it. And don't walk from your villa to the lodge at night unless you bring your own flashlight - not a well lit path at all, with uneven steps. The biggest challenge was dinner - however, if you don't care for what's on the menu, the chef always has a safer option available to you.

Room Tip: Sunset/Sunrise Villas are the best bet.

We like Treetops a lot despite the management not being on the ball {no one was around to show us our room when we arrived or take our bill when we left, apparently there is a guest activity advisor but in our three nights /four days she never found us, picnic lunches are very lacking in imagination for this sort of place, letting guests go off walking on the heavily wooded and often difficult terrain on a 2500 acre estate without a beacon is an accident waiting to happen, and the absence of air conditioning is a mistake in summer – and yes I know Treetops is an eco lodge but guests can always turn the air-con off if they want to}. However - the good points far outweigh my carping above. The place itself is half an hour by car outside Rotarua up its own road/drive and is nicely isolated from noise and hubbub. The central building is architecturally splendid, the suites are magnificent and the Estate is wonderful. Our lunch picnic at the “Bridal falls” was what picnics should always be – a very scenic walk/hike to a beautiful spot with nobody else there. The hotel style suited us well – communal drinks before dinner and unless you asked otherwise communal sitting down and eating very good food with the other guests. Very sociable and enjoyable. Service, when you ask for it, is exemplary. Breakfast superb. So there you are, the good definitely triumphs over the not so good!

This is probably the most quiet place I have ever been. Nestled below a ridge near Rotorua, this lodge promotes itself as an eco destination, with the trappings of a luxury hotel. The luxury is real. The service and food are outstanding. The eco is less apparent, because other than hiking ( very good), there is very little else to do. The net effect is that the luxury trumps the eco image, and you really don't care!
