Waikite Valley Thermal Pools

We were looking for a relaxing thermal pool experience and came across this place in the Lonely Planet guide. A limited amount of camping and van sites are available and the price includes free use of the pools - bargain! The amenities for campers are very new and very nice. The pools are great with a big one for activity and playing and several small ones where everyone just sits quietly. Temperature variations in each pool means that you can pick how hot you want it.

We ordered dinner from the cafe and it was a delicious lamb tagine and very good value.

The eco walk was very well done with the opportunity to really see the spring itself with the water bubbling up at some incredibly high temperature. Also great to see the system of cooling the water before it goes into the pools. The pools are emptied and refilled every night, ready for campground residents to slip into at 6.30am.

Great experience and well worth a visit.

This was a very nice location where you could experience the thermal spa's in public or private spas.

We chose the private spa although there were a number of public spa's you could choose to relax in.

The feeling it gave your body after the spa was like no other with an amazing silky smooth texture for your skin post the spa.

There was a very nice walk you could follow to see the origins of the spa pool water. quite an experience.

Room Tip: For privacy, choose the private suites. Each pool has a different temperature so you can pick what s...

We spent a relaxing afternoon in the pools - the Eco walk was great too! Bargain price for a powered site and use of the pools. The amenities were basic - the showers and toilets were closed for rents so we had to use the showers and toilets at the pools, but that wasn't an issue. I would recommend this place and would love to return myself.

These Pools are really worth a visit for a nice relaxing soak in the pools. They are emptied each night & refilled for next day. They have pools to suit all ages & have 3 Private Pools. My wife & I go out there now & again. They are only 30 minutes from Rotorua City.

They charge per person, and we ended up paying $40 for one night for a non-powered site for our sleepervan. We felt this was good enough, but not that great value for money.

Sites are very close together (think about 8 sites total). Kitchen facilities are very basic (hotplate, toaster, kettle). Washroom facilities were very cold, and the shower water was surprisingly not that warm despite the fact the property has 1000's of litres of boiling water coming to the surface every second. The drying shed is a nice idea but really did little for our wet towels.

The only positive was that the price allowed us to use the hotpools and (presumably, but no one seemed to be watching) the 'eco' tour up to a spring, which is about a 3 minute journey that would have been disappointing had we had paid for it.

The family wanted a swim in thermal pools. I didn't want a sanitised experience.
This was perfect.
Clean as a new pin, great setting, good coffee (flat white). Daughter says hot chocolate was good too.
Fantastic welcome and chat from staff- continued for our time there.
Great pool experiences.
Also take the little time to do the Eco tour and learn about the location. Well worth it.
We loved it. Good value.

After walking in Waimangu Valley and long drive from Auckland we decided to refresh and chill out in Waikite Pools. This was excellent decision. There's good choice of pools with different temperature. Everything looks and feels nice and clean. The only complaint I could have are changing/shower rooms - they were very basic and didn't looked too conforming. I also wish there had been any free lockers within facility. On the other hand for the guy like me who quickly gets bored in a spa or thermal pools there was excellent option of taking a short eco walk. It lead me to some interesting geothermal spots and was nice change to sitting in a pool. My wife loved this place. The cost for NZ standards was also quite ok.
