“Five enchanting treks in old podocarp forests”

Reviewed 29 April 2013

We did four of the five treks and was a worthwhile day, we met no other people the whole day.
We stayed in the Jailhouse Farmstay in Minginui, a bach just nearby the forest (own transport). Therefore there was no fee for walking in the forest, but if you travel from outside there would be an hours long bus ride.
Make sure you have sufficient fuel for reaching this region. The bach was very complete but with bring it yourself breakfast. Also we did not think there were any restaurants within 100km so we brought everything. The old and restored cabin had one normal bedroom with en-suite bathroom together 20m2 and one small with bunk beds. Total house surface is 50 m2. Small covered terrace in front with evening sun. Great view on one side over sheep farm valley.

From this Farmstay five treks can be done; to our opinion: Best and informative is the H trek 2 hrs roundtrip with very interesting Podocarp forest; Second is the waterfall trek, 2 hrs roundtrip also with beautiful forest and remains of past logging; Third is the Canyon trek 0.5 hr has some information on vegetation but you can walk much further; Fourth is the Lagoon trek, 1.5 hrs roundtrip with interesting types of forest, but the lagoon was dry this year. Along the asphalt road a camping and waterfall can be visited.
There is also a fifth trek, the Sanctuary loop 1.5 hrs roundtrip, which can be visited at night to possibly view Kiwi. The newly improved path has small reflectors alongside the trek.

We were picked up in the morning from Rotorua by driver Chris and guide Benoir. The drive out to the rainforest was in a comfortable coach with lots of interesting commentary and history on the way.

Benoir and Chris were both very committed to preserving this beautiful area teaching others about it. The walk was about 4 hours over fairly easy terrain and we saw so many beautiful sights along the way, I couldn't list them all. You will have a great time should you book this tour!
