It is hard to top the south island. Rotorua is not as pretty a town. It is a tourist trap for Maori villages and seeing the geysers and mud pools. If you have been to Yellowstone, you will be disappointed as this isn't on the same scale. Plus everything is privately owned and expensive. We thought the highlight of the town was the beautiful lake filled with black swans and other birds. Restaurants were below average. Shopping was pretty boring. It is the same stuff you see everywhere. we would have tried one of the spas but they were all booked so reserve in advance. Personally I would skip it and spend more time in the Bay of Islands.
