Description: Leonardo's is a small, family owned restaurant, Yuka and Leo have been in hospitality for more than 20 years all together. Our Menu is quite small only because we work only with the freshest products possible. For the same reason we change our menu very often, to try new flavours and recipe. The restaurant is open for dinner 7 nights a week.

We went to Rotorua for the weekend and searched on Trip Advisor for a nice place to have dinner as both my partner and I were feeling like Italian. We got there and luckily the host welcomed us but mentioned that since we didn't book we could only have the table for an hour (it was Saturday night so we were trying our luck).

The restaurant is relatively small but cosy atmosphere with helpful and attentive staff. Although they had a relatively small menu, all the the food we ordered were amazing and could say one of the best Italian meals I've had! We ordered the Bruchetta for entree, wild boar lasagne and hell's chicken paired with Chianti wine and topped with Tirimisu for dessert.

Definitely will come here again if we visit Rotorua again.

Food was beautiful! Menu isn't that big so just a warning for those who are expecting pizzas on the menu, there are none.

It's hard to believe anyone could not absolutely love the experience of dining at Leonardo's. The atmosphere and authentic food are second to none. All age groups are made to feel welcome in this busy little gem of a restaurant. Our meals were outstandingly presented, perfectly cooked examples of traditional Italian fare and it was with regret that eventually we finished our mouth-watering meals and had to leave. We can't wait to repeat the experience!

This is a tiny restaurant set off the main street in Rotorua in the central city area. It is run by a passionate Italian team. The menu is small, and they concentrate on doing this very well indeed. We returned for second visit while visiting family. The atmosphere is fun, as the restaurant is always full, the service is pleasant and prompt, and we ate every morsel of our pork special of the day and marinated spicy chicken, followed by tiramisu and creme caramel, and coffees.
Well done, Leonardo's.

Firstly, this is a very good, local restaurant, serving tasty, homemade Italian food, that it is fair to say is to the standard you would expect in Italy (having experienced it). However, we did not feel it warranted the top rated place on Tripadvisor for Rotorua. The restaurant simply did not have enough added value and at the more expensive end of the market, added value should be part of the top rated experience. We arrived mid evening (8.30pm) on a Saturday during the start of the winter holiday season in NZ and we were informed that there were no specials left as the restaurant had sold out. For me, this is not acceptable, as the standard menu, although all delicious sounding, is very concise. We had also been led to believe that the restaurant relied on offering specials based around locally and seasonally available produce - to sell out mid evening on a Saturday is just poor preparation. As a consequence, we choose a Gnocchi dish and Carbonara. Both were splendid and delicious, but in the case of the Carbonara in particular, these are dishes that are equally easy to prepare at home providing you have good ingredients. We like to visit an Italian restaurant for dishes that are challenging and unusual, e.g. filled pasta, lasagne, fish dishes etc. and despite being served delicious food, the limited options of these added value dishes was disappointing. The Gnocchi was fantastic though I will add and it is worth noting that the starter of breads and homemade dips was also superb. Staff were very friendly, but service was not exceptionally attentive either, although the intriguing placemats were an excellent idea. Also, seated towards the rear of the restaurant, you lose the feel of being in an Italian restaurant with ambience of the lighting slightly incorrect (too bright in places, too dim in others), and the theming is not quite so strong. In our experience for top rated on tripadvisor, there should just be a few more standard menu options, catering for vegetarian and pescetarian as well, better prep for a Saturday holiday period, and a tiny bit more gloss on top of what is an excellent restaurant.
