Ramada Resort Rotorua Marama
Ranked #51 of 92 Hotels in Rotorua
Reviewed 23 April 2014

We spent the Easter break at the Marama and I do not have a bad word to say!! We stayed in a two bedroom unit which was lovely, warm and cosy. And fully equipped! It was plenty big enough for my husband, two children (12 and 14) and I - certainly a much better size than a standard hotel room. My bed was deliciously comfortable, the furnishings were all clean and in excellent condition and all the glassware, crockery, linen etc were faultless.

As the resort is on the opposite end of the lake from Rotorua, there is a short drive back to town, but as these units are fully equipped with everything you need to cook your own meals... there is no need to drive back to town .... unless you want to!! Besides the drive gives you another great view of the lake.

The resort is very pretty and well maintained... and very relaxing. I only heard the rumble of a couple of trucks, however our unit was in the middle of the complex.

Our kids had a great time using the spa and pool.. with only a wee grumble about the temperature of the water, it wasn't cold enough to stop them going in though!

All in all we had a lovely weekend and would definitely stay there again.

I am a huge fan of Wyndham and am always raving about our latest holiday and the resorts quality, but sadly I left Rotorua feeling annoyed that we had used so many of our precious credits on it.
Here's why
1) Its a LONG way off the beaten track. I'm not really sure it's "Rotorua". I like to do something in the morning, come back to the resort for a few hours, give our baby a sleep etc and then have the option to plan another outing, but it's more than a 30km round trip, so with young kids we felt limited to 1 outing a day.
2) The big pool is NOT heated. They say it is, but that just means they put a cover on it. It was about 20deg. Given you are so remote, sitting around the pool is what we wanted to do, but there was only the small spa to use.
3) The units are TIRED and in need of an upgrade. Apparently one is not planned until next year. The rooms are also all very small, so getting in a portacot is quite difficult.
4) There is only one bathroom and the laundry is also in there. Some units (not all) have a second toilet. While they tell you this before you go, you don't really stop to realise how inconvienient that is until you live with it for a week! It also contributes to the general feeling that these unit are small!
5) Not child friendly. The combination of the stairs internally (narrow and twisting) and the decks that lead to unfenced water can be a bit stressful. It would be good if they could put gates on the deck and offer portable stair gates for the apartments when young families were staying.

This is my first negative review of Wyndham. Try Kirra Beach, Surfers, Port Douglas or Coffs Harbour before going here! There is a huge amount of accomodation available in Rotorua at incredibly good prices, so save your credits for another trip!

Situated on Lake Rotorua, with a canal running between the unit blocks, the Marama (as the outside sign still identifies it) is a quite charming small resort with quite a lot going for it.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit with a balcony right on the canal. The living areas are downstairs, with the bedrooms, bathroom and toilet upstairs. Well furnished, with plenty of crockery/cutlery/glassware. The kitchen included a full-sized fridge, dishwasher, oven and garbage disposal. There is also a washer and dryer. Air-conditioner in the lower area was adequate for the whole unit - it was cool-mild weather during our stay. The queen beds was comfortable.

The grounds around the complex are generally in very good condition - spacious and well maintained. The canals are problematic. Complete with a few ducks happily swimming about, they add to the look and serenity, however, with little water flow, the canals have become filled with weed and have generous clumps of scummy weed floating across the top - mostly at the end of the canal where our unit was located. No smell, but detracts from the look.

Being about 15Km from Rotorua has the advantage of being away from the town noise and smell (we only occasionally got a sulphur whiff), but the disadvantage is needing to drive back and forth to town for restaurant meals. The otherwise quiet location is spoilt by the regular rumble of timber trucks and other traffic past the resort - some units (such as ours) being very close to the roadway.

We had a couple of issues specific to our unit - door that would not lock properly and a fridge that was not cooling adequately. Maintenance staff attended both issues promptly, but solved neither. Another 'design' issue is the upstairs bathroom. A downstairs toilet would have been a very welcome addition.

We found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

Cannot comment on the in-house restaurant. The menu did not have enough appeal to keep us away from the excellent array of good restaurants in Rotorua.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Marama. Rotorua is a great little town and there is plenty to see and do in and around the place and it's only a 1 hour drive to the beautiful beaches on the Bay of Plenty. If the maintenance issue could be tidied up, then a stay here would be even more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Get a room overlook the lake - and away from the road.

Our first trip to New Zealand. Resort grounds very picturesque with canals leading to the lake. Enjoyed the restaurant (ate there twice) with lovely views of the grounds, great service, food and wines. Nice to be out of town a little to avoid the sulphur smell. A few nice walks 5 mins drive from resort. Other activities also not too far away (white water rafting and Hells Gate mud baths). Really appreciated staff at reception who were absolutely fantastic at helping us out with itinerary. Stayed 5 days and managed to fit in heaps of activities in that time.

Wonderful location and nice rooms! Everything was very clean. The pool was small with a small hot tub but clean. Be prepared for the thermal pool smells! The restaurant was great and staff was very friendly. Make sure you request a room in the canals.

We are Worldmark by Wyndam owners so when my Husband and I decided we were going to be Honeymooning in New Zealand the first thing I checked was if we had resorts near by. Sure enough, Wyndam had 2 locations within New Zealand both of which we were planning on traveling to. I booked our rooms online and had no problems with booking through our travelshare. We paid a nominal fee for the 2 night stay and that was all. Once we flew into Rotorua we retrieved our rental car and made our way to the resort. The directions on the website took us directly to the resort with no problems. It was a 20 min drive from downtown Rotorua to the Wyndam, but we didn't mind the idea of staying out of downtown. The ride itself was simple, a 2 lane highway of houses and farms made it an easy trip in and out. Once at the resort check in was easy, they gave us some information about the area and also had maps and could answer any questions we had. Our room was great, the resort was obviously quiet this time of year and made for a nice stay without a bunch of people around us. We stayed in a 2 bedroom on the water. It wasn't facing the lake like some where, but we still had a dock and water right outside which was nice.

The suite had 1 1/2 bathrooms, the upstairs bath had towel heaters (which after this trip I am spoiled with) and a simple shower with laundry capabilities as well. We did our wash with the laundry soap that was provided and it worked nicely. The bedroom we stayed in had a TV which was nice. The kitchen was stocked with coffee and tea and everything that goes with it which was great because my husband loves coffee and I my tea.

The parking was right out front of the room which made it nice on the few rainy days we had. We ate at the restaurant twice, once for breakfast and once for drinks and appetizers. The staff was very pleasant and made sure we were well taken care of. There are TVs in the restaurant and upon request the staff will put it on whatever the patron would like. Good selections of beer, cider and wine and although I didn't have liquor they had that to choose from as well. The food was all lovely, filled our bellies and was tasty while doing so. The view was the great part, wide views of the lake and water ways made you want to nuzzle next to the fire and warm your belly with some ale. Overall this was a great stay. I'm not sure what they charge for rooms, but as an owner I am very happy with the location, staff and resort.

Room Tip: We got a 2 bedroom which was plenty of room for a single couple. It was on the water and we had no...

the fact it is out of Rotorua is a plus, the rooms were clean and we were located on the water front so didn't have to look into some one else apartment. few surprises, rooms/towels not cleaned or replaced so you had to wash towels each day ( the washing machine shook the house ) if you wanted extras $10 each. no separate towels for the pool area. sent my son to reception to get replacement toilet rolls, he was told that we could have one only as the resort had run out and we would have to go and buy some.........(5 people) internet is dialup and charged so used our own "hotspot" gardens need to be kept in better shape. pools are good and the tennis court.
