“Luxury in a countryside setting”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

Lovely refurbished manor in beautiful countryside with very attentive service. We were lucky and received an upgrade on arrival. The suite was large and well decorated, stylish and welcoming. The heated floors in the bathroom were a nice addition and the luxurious bathroom products were an unexpected treat. Located about 20 mins drive from Rotorua it isn't the easiest place to find but it's well worth the stay and certainly looked like one of the best places to stay in the area.

This is a hard review tio write because while we enjoyed our stay at Hamurana Lodge and the people there were very welcoming and friendly, we didn't feel it was value for the money spent. We had two adjoining rooms, each with there own bathroom and bedroom. We stayed for three nights at a cost of around $1100 per night for ourselves and the two boys. For that sort of money we were expecting something with a 5-star, 'special' feel to it. While our bedroom was comfortably furnished we had only one bedside lamp on one side of the bed and no in-room fridge although we did have a Nespresso machine and pods/milk, etc. The wardrobe under the eave of the roof had no light in it which made finding items in one's suitcase a bit of a challenge at times. The bathroom was not what we would regard as 5-star. For a start, we were given only one cake of soap to use at both the handbasin and in the shower. This is a pet peeve of ours as a cake of soap is only about 90 cents and yet the lack of a second cake really annoys! The shower was over the single-sized spa bath and the fittings were less than 5-star with a plastic cistern and standard plastic toilet seat to match.
Breakfast should have been something memorable and it was, - but for the wrong reasons. While there was a selection of meats and cheeses for those that like that sort of breakfast, as well as stewed fruit and cereals, etc, we were only offered a hot breakfast on one of our three mornings and that was a choice of eggs boiled, poached or fried. We were also given home-made croissants each day, fresh from the oven, but that was the limit of the breakfast. Again, we felt it was rather meagre for the amount we were paying to stay there.

Overall, we were quite disappointed - we expected a lot more than we got. We will not return and nor would we recommend it to others which is a shame because the staff really were terribly nice people and very helpful.

Room Tip: The rooms upstairs at the front have a nice lake view.

We stayed here for only one night (unfortunately).
What a beautiful setting this lodge is in, starting at the winding driveway, welcomed by the friendly goat, chickens and labrador and of course the lodge itself. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Our room was beautiful, very large with desk, comfortable bed and beautiful bathroom with Loccitane toiletries to use.
Nice dining room and bar with pool table. Location very quiet, we found it great being away from the sulphur smell of Rotorua (but we did have a car). Breakfast was included, there's free WIFI, in-room safe (not that it's needed), coffee provided on arrival.
We wish we had stayed longer, and next time we come to the North Island of NZ we'd love to come and stay again!

Exzeptionell style, warmly furnished. If you arrive late, there is an exzellent offer of the kitchen: a big platter of various ham cheese, olives, salat and much more next to the fire place.
For warmer seasons there is a garden view terrace with view over the beautiful park and its animals. Short drive of 12 min.to town of Rotorua. Rooms to the garden are beautiful and tasteful furnished with big bath.

Room Tip: If you don't want to stay in touristic Rotorua but at a romantic countryside style hotel in Shor...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this quiet and fine hideaway. Lovely location, estate, decor, facilities. It definitely delivered on quality and service. It was the little details that made this place special, from the warm welcome by Patrick, to the lovely chocolates left on our bedside table. Everything was done with great care and finesse. Definitely worth another visit.

Room Tip: Rooms facing west as it gives a view of the hill with sheep grazing. Quiet

From the minute we turned into the leafy, winding driveway and were greeted warmly at the front door, Hamurana Lodge promised to be a special place to stay for our brief over night escape. We were served with a pot of Earl Grey and home made nougat before being shown to our spacious suite on the first floor. This was beautifully furnished with real attention to detail - our own Nespresso machine, complementary sweets and roasted nuts and a nice surprise - an IPod already loaded with an excellent selection of Jazz classics. The bathroom was spotless - always a big deal with us and the bed linen was top quality. Our host immediately set about recommending a restaurant for dinner ( which turned out to be excellent) and promptly made a booking for us. Breakfast hit just the right spot - a generous selection of cold meats, cereals and fruit and some very special home made croissants. We sat on the front porch over looking the stunning gardens and felt rather wonderful ! We thoroughly recommend this lodge for a very quiet break - you'll truly be looked after.

These guys provide great boutique service and customer experience.

The long and winding road to the hotel entrance was a nice way to get used to the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel.

The service was exceptional and professional.

Breakfast was fresh and very nice.

We arrived before checkin time and they were all too happy to settle and check us in.

The rooms are very nice with a great country feel.

The destination is a great escape into a different world.

Couples only. Not suitable for families.

Room Tip: All quite nice. try to get the rooms in the main building above the restaurant/living areas.
