“Lovely hostel in a great spot”
Reviewed 17 May 2013

Stayed there in April 2013

Nice hostel near the Government Gardens as well as the Polynesian Spa, and only about 5 minutes away from the Rotorua I-site.
They have some lovely walks not too far away as well.

Crash Palace itself is well equipped with 2 kitchens on each level that are very nice for cooking. The toilets and bathrooms are ok as well.

I was staying in a 4 share female dorm that was quite nice, altrough the beds were a bit squeaky. Even though they have a DJ desk downstairs, you don't hear too much of it when the doors are closed.

Chris and Max were helpful, nice and could answer any questions we had (and we had a lot sometimes... :-) ) Thanks guys!
We got some discount vouchers for the Te Puia from them, which was really nice.

The lounge is comfy and they have a good movie selection, as well as a pool table there.

What's also very convenient is that New World is only about 3 minutes away, so really good for stocking up.

All in all, I'd definitely reommend this hostel!

Friendly reception from Max. Wifi is cheap, but not free. You can get discount bookings on local attractions at the desk and save big. Sounds like they had a real party going on downstairs (they had a DJ's desk in the lobby area!) but my room seemed fairly sound proof. Some hostels provide towels for single rooms, they didn't, but I didn't ask either.

Room Tip: rooms thru the east door from the staircase are away from the bathrooms and kitchen and not above th...

Wifi is free when booking through certain sites as they cover the cost of this for us. I am going to look into putting towels in the single and double rooms thanks for the suggestion. hope you have a great trip through NZ

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights in February 2013. This is a well equipped, fairly large hostel with great outside space out back for barbecues, and general relaxing in good weather. There are 2 main kitchens with the usual facilities, my only complaint is that people seemed to neglect to wash up after themselves and leave dishes in the sink - but the staff seem to sort this during daily servicing. Reception is also a bar, which sells cheap(ish) beer. However this means you can't consume your own alcohol while this is open (to 10pm). Noise levels were fairly low and we had good sleep through our stay. There were a set of DJ decks, mostly playing reggae and dub at low volume during the day, which was a nice touch. The hostel can get really good discounts on the Mitai Maori Village trip (history, hangi feast etc), so would recommend booking here. There were also other excursions and activities organised by the hostel. Rotorua is a fun place to spend a few days, I would recommend doing the city walk through the local geothermal activity (free), then maybe head to Hot and Cold River for a dip (c.25k south). Rotorua has a strong, eggy aroma due to the sulphur, so bear that in mind!

Stayed here a couple days and would come back for sure! I think it's been newly renovated and it's always clean! There are two kitchens that never close and they are fully equipped, it even has a blender and food processor!
There are little shelves next to your bed to put your phone or other little things, and there are a lot of plugs in the rooms which is very handy!

Great hostel, very much liveable, not overly special but then nothing to complain about either (which is a more important indicator I think).

Nice living spaces, kitchen, barbecue. Good social events, had my best night out in NZ here.

This past trip to New Zealand was my first time ever staying at hostels. The first hostel that we stayed in in Taupo was just ok. I will say that we loved our stay at the Crash Palace in Rotorua.

The hostel itself is very nice. It's 2 stories, has a lounge with books, a tv, and a pool table, a computer room, 2 decent sized kitchens with an amble amount of fridge space and dishes, a dining area and deck area with amble amount of tables and chairs, a counter that almost always has music playing during the day, and a hot tub that was rarely occupied. It wasn't a problem to be able to use the different facilities because the place was never over crowded. It was definitely a lot nicer and spacious than our previous hostel.

Our room was also quite large. We had a private room outside by the deck and it was quite nice. A large bed, closet, desk, and private bathroom. Bathroom and shower were quite large too though the sink is a tad small though wasn't a big deal.

They also provide a laundry service. It was $6 to wash and dry. It was nice having the option available to us and we used the service at least once.

The hostel was pretty quiet. Unlike the other hostel we stayed at, this place was very mellow. No crazy college age kids partying all night! Felt very comfortable and not out of place.

The hostel also organizes activities every once in a while. I know one evening there was beer pong going on and on our 2nd evening there was a Maori Mud Tour. For $35 a local Maori guy would take you out in a van, give you a brief tour of the area, gather hot thermal mud, and take you to a hot thermal pond to bathe. It was really fun! The guy Wi (sp?) was really nice and brought his pleasant children with him who were all willing to answer questions. And the money that they made all went toward helping underprivileged kids. It was a very cool idea and definitely a lot cheaper than the professional ones they have in the area.

We really like the staff too. We only really interacted with the owner Chris and an employee named Max. They were both incredibly helpful. They helped us find things to do around town, were very eager to answer questions, and overall just very helpful and friendly. We greatly appreciated their hospitality!

Our stay was also very affordable and quite nice for what we paid.

My one problem was in the kitchen. The kitchen was large enough, the dishes available, the fridge available for groceries, and free use of rice, pasta, and spices BUT there was always dirty dishes in the sink. Like a few piles. It is NOT a fault to the owner or staff because it is not their responsibility to do them. It was just kind of sad that some other guests didn't care or thought the hostel was full of servants.

That's really the only bad thing I have to say about the place. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely choose to return there again if we are ever back in Rotorua.
