“A truely remarkable and life memorable Stay at Koura Lodge”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

This is just a note of thanks on behalf of my family and friends and of course yours truly.
In fact BIG and many thanks for making your Lodge seem like it was the “Burtenshaw’s Lodge.
It truly is a special place to stay, lakeside, natures haven, the flora was spectacular in spring bloom, along with the bird life, particularly the Kowhai and Tui’s and of course the weather just perfect.
The lodge, rooms and our gathering and concert amphitheater's just awesome and very very homely. The breakfasts were just heavenly, what a way to start the day with your great food, warm and open dining room such a wonderful atmosphere where we could all sit eat chat and have a laugh and then spill out onto your lake side deck and enjoy the beautiful view and sunny Rotorua weather.
The lakeside lawn a perfect place to chill with friends and family, have a quiet beer and wine and catch up, jam some music - enjoy the lake. The canoeing was fun and to follow with a lake view shore spa just terrific. A few of us even found the lake water not too cold for October and after a long day night to enjoy the spa and take in the stars was mind blowing.

To say that the “Burtenshaw’s" enjoyed their stay is well just a tad underdone! And I am very sure that you felt the buzz and joy from each of us.
I could not have wished for a more perfect place to come back to NZ and stay and to host and have my family for what I am is sure to be etched on all of our memories for life.

Simply to you all - thanks a heap for a perfect place to spend time with the family, and have such exceptional and friendly service. From us all!!

Just perfect.
A warm welcome, beautiful clean rooms, beds extremely comfy, very tasteful interiors and decor through-out lodge. A cosy lounge where we sat by the wood burner, watched the rugby with a local take away one night.
The views from the lodge are like a post card, it's just stunning. Very peaceful night and day.
Delicious breakfast cooked to order. Spa pool perfect way to unwind at the end of the day with views over the lake and own private jetty.
Kayaks at the lodge are great fun as is the picturesque tennis court. Easy parking and a short drive into town.
Gavin and Kim were the perfect hosts.

We booked a family suite for two nights and when we arrived were upgraded to an apartment with lovely views over the lake. It was huge- more like a home with a massive lounge which included a pool table and a huge kitchen The rooms were large and beautifully furnished .We loved the lake side spa pool in the evening and enjoyed the beautiful gardens and peaceful atomosphere . It was the perfect winter break and is very close to the Luge and many attractions. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and cooked a delicious breakfast . Would recommend this place to anyone-as long as you have a car as it is not in central Rotorua.

Room Tip: ask for the upgrade to the upstairs apartment if you have a family

Kim and Gavin make you feel very welcome upon your arrival. The Lodge has amazing views with a lot of facilities at your disposal. It was only 10 minutes from Rotorua Centre for food and sightseeing, 45 minutes drive from Hobbiton and short drive to many cultural and geothermal attractions. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Lovely setting, warm ambiance. The rooms were small, high priced and lacking in privacy. The manager was polite and courteous, the food was nice and the rooms were clean, but for the price of the property it felt like it was lacking, especially since guests are expected to check in during strictly set hours. Having said that, the setting was fabulous and again it was a very clean and comfortable property, just overpriced for what it actually had to offer and in terms of all the other places we have stayed in New Zealand, it was not worth the money.

We were really looking forward to this part of our trip but were very disappointed. First, we did not realize this was a bed and breakfast. That is more on our travel agent than the property. But in previewing the website prior to our trip, it looked like a very warm and friendly place where the owners and their dog greeted guests, served afternoon tea, etc. for guests arriving. When we arrived, we had been traveling since early morning and arrived around early afternoon. We were greeted by the Manager who was very nice but seemed a bit distracted. We had to lug our luggage up a hill and stairs to get to our room. There was no "afternoon tea" as advertised on their website and there was nothing to eat because it was a B & B. We were starving and since we were traveling without a car, we were stuck. Luckily there was a menu for delivery and we go some food. In the entire stay, we never once saw an owner, they live next door and we never saw them or their dog. The property is run by two on-site Managers, very nice people, but not the owners as the website leads you to believe. The property itself is beautiful, but it has a cold feel to it. We were looking forward to spending some down time at the property but got the feeling we were just in the way, very uncomfortable. Almost felt like staying in a hotel but without the convenience of a hotel, i.e., restaurant or bar. The location is pretty far out from town and it is literally a $20 cab ride each way. So, if you are staying there wthout a car, it will cost you $40 round trip each time you go into town - and you have to go into town in order to get a lunch, dinner, or drinks. Once in town, Rotoura doesn't really have much to do for our taste. We found a couple good restaurants but they are mostly Indian and Thai restaurants - not our favorite. Also, they all seem to close down between lunch and dinner so if you are in town for lunch and don't want to spend another $40 for round trip to get back to Koura Lodge and come back in for dinner, you have to hang around until they open again at 5:30 ish. We did spend our last day at the Polynesian Spa in the mineral pools and getting a massage which was really nice.

I am sure for many, Rotoura is a great place is you can tolerate the smell of sulfur and want to visit all the geological parks and geysers - we have seen those in Yellowstone. It really was not a good choice for us, but again, that is on us. If you have a car and lots of activities to do, then staying at Koura Lodge is not a bad choice. Again, the property is beautiful and peaceful, but just not real warm and inviting as the other B & B we stayed at in Queenstown and certainly not convenient to town.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that Jake (our dog) was not there to greet you, he died last year. We are pleased to hear that Gavin & Kim (Managers) were able to look after you. All guests to Koura Lodge are offered on arrival tea & coffee and home baking, you were no exception to this. We are sorry that our on-site facilities, open air spa pool, sauna, tennis court, kayaks and lodge lounge, did not fulfil your holiday expectations. It seemed our town and its choice of restaurants fell short also, we can only apologise for this and be grateful your opinion is in the minority. Not sure why you didn't find the fully stocked fridge in the guest kitchenette, plenty of wine, beer, drinks to choose from. You make a good point that it is always best to travel by car in NZ, a small country but many things to do and see far apart.
For the benefit of anyone reading this review, please note, Rotorua has more to offer than a few Thai restaurants and geothermal parks. To list a few, 14 lakes, redwood forest walking and mountain biking park, Luge, Zorb, several adventure parks, 5 golf courses, spa facilities and more.

This is a beautiful property right on the shore of the lake. Our room (4) had french windows opening on to a lawn, with deck chairs, which led down to the lake and had stunning views. Actually the room had much more going for it than that. It was large and light. It had a big bathroom with a spa bath and good shower. Everything that could be thought of was provided. the list includes thick bathrobes, good quality face flannels, steal able coat hangars and free wifi. We stayed 2 nights the first we were on our own and the second the lodge was full allowing us to meet other travellers. Breakfast was convivial and cooked to order.
The owner Gina could not do enough for us including booking our restaurants (excellent choices) and arranging our tours including a motor scooter because at present having a knee problem I cannot walk far.
