“A bit out of the way, but good location”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Koura Lodge is right on the shore of Lake Rotorua, but it is a bit difficult to find, being a short drive from the town centre and down a steep drive (just wide enough!) with a very small signpost to tell you that you have arrived. The accommodation is spacious and comfortable, and we were welcomed by Kim - an actual Kiwi (most places we stayed, all the staff seemed to be from Europe or, like Kim's husband, South Africa). As some other reviewers have noted, the breakfast was a bit ordinary, but adequate. Didn't have time to use the lake, but the facilities (including canoes/kayaks) were there. Unlike some of the B&B's we stayed in NZ, it felt a bit impersonal, but everything we needed was there.

Our second visit to the Lodge which we highly recommend. Though only a few minutes drive from the centre it's setting gives the rooms a secluded feel being set down a slope at the lakes edge. Mature trees shield ii from surrounding buildings. Can swim in the lake and canoes are also available. Modern wooden buildings are very comfortable with only small gripe being noise travels between the rooms. Freshly prepared breakfast in comfortable lounge - but you need to be there between 8 and 9.

Room Tip: If you want to be right on the lakeside need to specify - but even the other rooms have view out ove...

The rooms are modern, clean and stylish. Lovely shower and decked area outside the rooms. Free kayaks..a nice touch. Breakfast not as good as we had expected...no bacon, eggs etc as we had read but what was there was fine. Free wifi is advertised but this only lasts a very short time after which you need to buy more...VERY PENNYPINCHING. There are no restaurants within walking distance so we ordered delivered pizza...Thai and Indian also available and sat by the lake which was magic. No one is on the premises except for breakfast and check in...I wonder what would happen in the event of an emergency? We locked the front door at night.

We were upgraded to the apartment, which has a living room and a kitchen in addition to the two bedrooms. It was tastefully furnished, and fully equipped. It even has a pool table! The place has beautiful views of Lake Rotorua, and you can use kayaks to go out on the lake. The rates are expensive, but we found it to be on par (in terms of price) with other places in NZ. The rate includes breakfast. The only negative is the Wi Fi connection. We were given 50 MB free and they were literally used up by checking e mail for 10 minutes. We were given the same free data in other places in NZ and it somehow lasted for much longer.

A beautifully appointed lodge on the banks of Lake Rotorua with great views and private jetty.
The disappointment of driving into the somewhat sad tourist town of Rotorua with its half empty shops and run down feel were soon dissipated by the beautiful Koura Lodge with its well appointed rooms, stunning gardens and friendly welcome. Only 10 minutes to the north of town you will find yourself in a haven of tranquility and luxury.
We were upgraded to a large room in the upper building with terrace looking over the lake surrounded by the well kept gardens with its abundant local flora. The hosts at the lodge, Gavin and Kim are very welcoming and helpful, they also serve a great breakfast in the vaulted wooden dining room. The lodge offers a lake front hot tub and free kayaks along with a tennis court in the adjoining property. The only disappointment is the hefty charge for wifi - the free period lasted about 5 minutes and to the connected traveler this is an oversight.
The lodge is well situated to explore the thermal parks of Rotorua and is 10 mins from the skyline with its views of the lake and luge.

This is a lodge style get away on the lake in Rotorua. The view is brilliant. Wood construction rooms so the sound insulation is not the best. Conversations and TV sounds as well as people walking on the wooden boards carry through to the room. Ok if you are not sleeping in.
The managers are delightful and so obliging it makes you feel right at home. Outside spa and sauna on the lake edge.
Not too far to drive out to town for a meal.
Wifi is available up to a limit but there are also computers set up around in open areas. DVD collection available too.
Breakfasts were great but the time open was only 8:00 to 9:00 so you have to be up bright and early if you want to eat
