“We Loved It”
Reviewed 27 March 2010

we travelled around New Zealand for 5 weeks, before finishing off with 3 days in Rotorua. This lodge was the best, out of all our various hotels and lodges.
The room was very nice with a super bathroom, and a spa bath.
The hosts were 2 young people who were very professional and helpful and made us really welcome.
The lodge was on the side of the lake in a stunning spot.our favourite thing was to sit in the hot tub, and watch the sun go down.

We spent at Koura Lodge our last night in New Zealand, before heading back to China, where we live. It was a wonderful experience : the location, just a few minutes away from the city, right on the lake, is just Heaven, quiet, beautiful and so relaxing. We we were traveling with our five kids and had the opportunity to spend the night in the lakefront complex, which consist of a huge apartment (four bedrooms, one living room) with direct access to the lake, a very nice garden where children could play with our own private jetty and canoes. Breakfast was also very nice. We just regret we couldn't stay longer...

We spent a week here (including Xmas) and it was great. With a 14 & 17 year old (along with my wife and I), we booked the apt with two large bedrooms (each with a private bath/shower), a huge living area with billard table, massive fireplace, two couches, TV with theater sound, large kitchen and two decks. It was early/mid-summer there, so starting to get warm. The view of the lake was tremendous, and we made full use of the kitchen to the point that we only took advantage of the wonderful breakfast but once (it was great!). We had an SUV and used the apartment as the base to go all over North Island on daytrips and numerous adventures and it was perfect! We took advantage of the wonderful jacuzzi right at the lake edge several times and just soaked in the view. It was so quiet there all the time, you're inclined to whisper...nice change of pace for us! Having a computer with internet access in the apartment was great ~ enabling us to book things on the fly, check weather reports and figure out driving directions and distances (and taking advantage of internet booking savings). Local adventures we enjoyed included: Zorbing (both types), Skydiving (yes, both kids), luge, spectacular helicopter flight to private volcanic island, best ATV Tour ever (Quadzone, right up the road), tremendous repelling and cave exploration to see "glow worms" and enjoying numerous lakes, beaches and towns in the immediate area.
The staff was very accomodating, as was the owner. They directed us to the local discount supermarket, provided invaluable advice on destinations and driving routes, and lent us kitchen items we needed.
Town was great ~ tons of restaurant options, we made great use of the video store, and the sulpher springs were really fun (and smell was a non-issue everywhere!). We never managed to take advantages of the mud spas & mineral waters, nor fishing ~ both had been recommended. The live music in town was great, as were the fireworks over the lake we could watch from the apartment or off the dock.
We'd only make a few suggestions to further improve this great apartment. There are non-biting lake flies that are attracted to light at night, so providing screens on the numerous sliding doors so we could ventilate would have been huge. There is no A/C (nore really a need for it), but after several days they offered to bring in some portable fans which made it perfect. The beds were super comfortable, but only came with a duvet (no top sheet), which made everyone too hot at night -- so top sheets would have been a welcomed addition. Kitchen was good, but somewhat limited on pans, cookie sheets, etc. In a week, we never managed to really figure out the microwave (a German unit, and the only thing that didn't have a operations manual ~ we even tried to download one on the computer but Adobe wasn't installed and wouldn't let us install it). There was also a third bathroom off the living room that was locked off (not yet renovated?), which would have been really convenient during meal times and when we were all racing to get out the door. These are very, very minor issues on a place that was always spotless, dramatically beautiful, and very, very comfortable. Everyone on staff went out of there way to accomodate us. We'll return there whenever we have the chance to revisit Rotorua again!

This lodge is in a lovely secluded neighborhood right on Lake Rotorua with beautiful gardens surrounding the buildings. The managers are very friendly and helpful in planning what to do and see in the area. Also, their breakfasts are delicious. Our room was immaculate and quiet, with complimentary coffee, tea and internet just outside our door. Koura Lodge was the perfect place to start our New Zealand vacation. We felt immediately at ease after a long flight and drive. We would recommend this lodge to anyone coming to the Rotorua area and would stay there again if we return.

We arrived in the afternoon at Koura Lodge, in Rotorua, NZ. The first thing you notice is a beautiful building on the shores of lake Rotorua. Our rooms (one standard and one family suite) were situated in the main building - the terrace went out on the lake, we were just steps away from the water. Everything at the lodge is well thought and beautifully executed - the wood used for the bookshelf and in the bathrooms is magnolia, the dining/living room (which you can access freely) has a large window front out to the water, the rooms are spacious and well designed. On site you can enjoy a jacuzzi and sauna, the kids loved playing on the tennis/basketball court, the trampoline and went kayaking out on the lake. The lodge serves a great breakfast and Louise and Tom, the managers, were great with tips about visits in the region that were less known to tourists. I would highly recommend this haven of peace to anyone who travels to NZ - stay 2 nights to really enjoy the region and the lodge. We will go back if we visit the country again.

We spent two nights at Koura Lodge, and it was shame that we did not stay there longer.

The location was perfect! Right on the lake with stunning views of the surrounding area. We were close to the city but still far enough away that we felt secluded, especially as we had the lodge to ourselves. Doubtless a rare treat for this gem but also because we stayed out of season.

Tom and Louise was very helpful in providing advice and tips on what to do and see in Rotorua. Without it we would have missed a couple of spots.

We only stayed at Koura Lodge for 2 nights but would happily have spent a week there. It is in the most beautiful location, far enough from Rotorua not to smell and right on the edge of the stunning lake.

The rooms were lovely and we had the whole lodge to ourselves which was a real treat. The weather was perfect and we were canoeing, sunbathing, playing tennis on their superb court and relaxing in the hot tub watching the stars with a glass of wine.

We are frequent travellers, to many 5* destinations, our expectations are very high and this place definitely gets a big thumbs up as one of the nicest we have ever stayed.

The staff were delightful, very knowledgeable and cooked the best breakfasts!
