We spent two nights in Rotorua as we chose it as a base to explore the Maori culture and the geothermal valley. The hotel staffs were very courteous and helpful. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant one day. We ordered salmon eggs benedict and Spanish style Omelette, both of them tasted very good and nicely presented. The studio we stayed was clean, nicely decorated, but the style is a little pretentious. And we think it was overpriced. For NZD$215 per night (breakfast was not included), I would expect something more.

Since Polynesian spa was highly recommended by the hotel staffs, we went to check it out. The lake spa was okay but I really enjoyed the massage.

There are so many Maori culture tours in the area, with limited time we had, we only went to the one called Whakarewarewa - The Living Thermal Village. It is fascinating to see that the village is actually inhabited by Maori people. We enjoyed the tour very much and it was also less commercial.

As far as the geothermal sites, we went to wai-o-tapu and Waimangu, not very impressed if compare to the Yellowstone Park. The latter is far more bigger, dynamic, colorful and with reasonable entrance fee.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay except the whole town really smells - the sulphur odor, 24x7. If I ever go back to the area, I will stay in Lake Taupo, which is about one hour south of Rotorua. We made some brief stops in the town on our way from Taronga to Rotorua. I think it is nicer and newer than Rotorua, surrounded by a gorgeous lake. And it doesn’t smell.

EveThank heavens we found the Regent, we have stayed in a number of the upper price ranged hotels in Rotorua, the Regent is head & shoulders above what's on offer at other hotels. Our initial stay was 2 nights & we re-booked for our return journey. The rooms are very well appointed, it has a lovely restaurant & bar. The hosts Darryn and Brent are very welcoming & can't do enough for the guests. It's location is walking distance to all the highlights, Eat Street, the main shopping areas, Polynesian Spa & the various historic buildings. This hotel deserves to be the 1st choice for anyone travelling to Rotorua, it certainly will be for us.

This boutique motel offers understated elegance and friendly service from a very convenient location. The rooms were very well appointed and the bathroom had a huge shower.

We stayed at the Regent of Rotorua for two nights on a recent golfing trip to NZ. First glances of the building do not do justice to the beautifully renovated rooms which are stylish and sumptuous. We upgraded to a king size room in the new building which is well worth doing unless you want to smoke - then the older motel style rooms, which are also very nice should be your choice. Darren and his staff are incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. In addition the restaurant serves excellent food - better than the fine dining restaurant they recommended in fact but the kitchen is quite slow so don't be in a hurry to eat and be on your way. We felt this was the best hotel we stayed in during our vacation. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose the new block if possible

We drove down from Auckland and were initially going to stay two nights in Taupo. Unfortunately, it was blowing a gale and looked uninviting. We decided to continue on to Rotorua on the Monday and based on recommendations from trip advisor, we decided to stay at the Regent Boutique hotel. They were busy but said they could fit us in for what was originally a two night stay. The room 17 was very nicely done out (probably the best interior designing that we have struck in a motel for a long time) King size super comfy bed, automatic slow closing toilet seat-not a big size motel room and obviously set up for handicapped use.

After an extremely good meal in a restaurant (which we will review separately), we told them that we would stay an extra two nights and make it a total of four night stay. The next morning they upgraded as too room 13 which they said was bigger since we were staying another three nights. We were a bit disappointed with this room as the furnishings were still well appointed but the bed was only a queen size and not as comfy. We also had trouble with the reception on our New Zealand Telecom USB modem being blocked by the room. We found this out after three hours on the phone with our Australian IT person. When we took the laptop around the pool it worked fine but meant that we could not work in the room. As we were travelling on business, this really wasn't suitable. We also felt that noise seemed to travel from the room next door and also from the room above.

The managers had mentioned that they were extremely busy on Wednesday night but should be able to work something out for us. We took off on Wednesday morning to see clients and returned around 1:30-2PM to find that we had no room for the night. They could not fit us in but we do not understand why they could not have worked this out on the Tuesday night when we are having dinner and even Wednesday morning as we did not leave to see clients until 8 AM. They said we could return on the Thursday night but we elected to move into the Novotel down the road for the next two nights.

Generally staff could not have been more helpful but this did leave a bit of a bad taste and probably overrode the other positive aspects of our visit here in the hotel

one of the Regent's main attractions was the close proximity to everything in Rotorua. We walked everywhere, whether it be to tourist attractions or to restaurants.

Regent of Rotorua is brilliant all the way around. It has the appearance of an old school motel but with modern, luxurious comfort on the inside. The service was warm and friendly, everyone made us feel so welcome. The location is perfect, just steps away from 'Eat' street and everything else in Rotorua. I would love to go back to Rotoru just to stay at the Regent!

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor is a beautiful large space perfect for families.
