Stayed over in a double room. We were the only people there, so had the whole place to ourselves, which was brilliant. Facilities were really good and the place was super tidy.

Kitchen was great and there was tea and coffee there as well.

Everything worked really well and we were looked after the whole time.

Cheryl was really helpful and showed us where lots of different places were in Rotorua, really went above and beyond what she needed to do as a host. We made it to the secret hot pools, so thanks a lot for that guys! :-)

We had a great time using the kayaks in the morning and the kayak trolleys were great, really good! We were even able to watch the Ireland vs Australia game on for the RWC and were a big fan of the rain water in the fridge.

Keep up the good work guys – If we come to Rotorua again, we will be back.

Thanks a lot

Andy and Annie

i enjoyed my solo visit to Lyons Lakestay. I was in Rotorua for a conference and my initial motivation was to find cheaper accommodation than the conference hotel. I wasn't prepared for the beauty of Lake Okareka. I "stole" some time away from the conference to hike the trail that goes half-way around this beautiful lake. The Lakestay is not a B & B but more like a high-end hostel with private rooms (double beds) and common areas such as kitchen and bathroom. Its got all that you need at a very affordable price. Cheryl keeps the place spotless. To me, it felt like I was in a B and B. This combination is a rare find in an up-market luxurious lakeside community. Because of it's location out of the way, it'll never attract the young low-end backpackers that is often the downside of many hostels. It's all very well appointed and very clean. Cheryl is very hospitable, friendly, and helpful. You'll inevitably want to spend more time here than you allotted!!

Overall the idea of the place was great, just had the problem that the room and bedding were real damp. This was too the point that we up and left for a motel in town at midnite as we were unable to stay. The next day I mentioned to the owner politely that we'd had that issue....It was dismissed with the " no-one else has complained," no offer of money back or the fact we had to pay another $120 to stay somewhere else....Very Poor host...an apology for the bad experience would have done it.

This complaint was a real surprise! I did apologise when she delivered the key to me the next day.The guests were only here for the 1 night while attending a family dinner nearby,I was expecting them about 4-5pm but never arrived so I didnt get the opportunity to meet them and arrange to put the heater on .The key had been picked up by a family member earlier ,so at the end of their evening they let themselves in(by this time I was in bed)They did not attempt to contact us re the problem, despite our front door and doorbell being just 3 meters from their entrance.
The Lakestay rooms are very well insulated and ,with double glazing. It was not a very cold night as compared to others recently so i made the decision not to leave the heater on,not knowing when they would arrive. The heater and de humidifier had been on that morning and most days during the week with other guests staying when we had a cold, wet spell of weather.
I did,of course check the room and bedding next day,and did not find it to be damp .
I will certainly ensure that a heater is on in this room for future guests in the winter months.I do feel sorry that they arrived and didnt feel comfortable, but still surprised at the claim of it being damp.
What this guest did not mention in her review was that there were other family members in another room that were very happy with their stay and room.Because they didnt arrive earlier to check in ,they didnt experience the Lakestay and environs in warmer daylight hours.
Discussions have since been held with the gentleman who booked and paid for the room, with a satisfactory outcome and a refund given.

We loved the facilties and the friendly hosts! The surroundings were so beautiful and we got a good night's rest. We loved the fresh muesli in the morning and if we needed a lift out hosts were only too happy to help us out.

Spent a week based at Lyons Lakestay, really helpful, relaxed and accommodating hosts with all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. Also very nice homemade breakfasts.

Located a short drive out of Rotorua it's a very peaceful place without the tourists and smells of the town. Good access by bike to to all the mountain bike trails in the Whakarewarewa Forest nearby.

Just 10 minutes by car from all the tourist spots of Rotorua, our stay at Lyons Lakeside proved to be just what was needed. Situated near Lake Okareka, one of the many lakes in Rotorua, it was the perfect location to relax and unwind after a really busy period of work. Set amongst greenery and close by the lakeside we enjoyed bird life, stunning vistas and spotless, comfortable accommodation. Cheryl, the owner, welcomed us and her friendliness and knowledge of the area helped make our stay so pleasant. We appreciated her sample of freshly caught trout too. Kayaks and bikes are available for hire and there are many walks in the area such as Lake Okareka Walkway, a 2.5 kms trek which features native vegetation, farmland, lake and wetland scenery and wildlife. A hide has been built on it so you can bird watch. We saw black swans, pied stilts, canadian geese, herons, mallard and paradise ducks, pukekos, shags and their young.

Two minutes away from Lyons Lakeside is Lake Tikitapu ( Blue Lake) and not far away Lake Tarawera, known for its big rainbow trout catches. We loved coming back to this magic location each day after doing the touristy activities in Rotorua.

We booked for 3 nights, stayed for 4 and left reluctantly to drive back to Wellington and work commitments. Would I recommend Lyons lakeside? Absolutely.
