Owner description: Te Puia spans 70 hectares within the historic Te Whakarewarewa Valley, on the edge of town. We are home to the world famous Pohutu geyser, to mud pools, hot springs, to silica formations to the Kiwi bird and the national schools of wood carving, weaving, stone and bone carving. We have shared these treasures with manuhiri (visitors) for 170 years and proudly continue that legacy today.

This is absolutely a must do! The culture, the wildlife and the springs/mud, just wonderful. Definitely see the show, especially if you have kids with you, it's great. Very friendly and helpful staff, take a full day at least.

Our guide was great, she really enjoyed her job which definitely came across during our walk around. Loved the carving and weaving schools, so many talented students. A bonus with the geyser, mud pools etc.

An amazing place to visit, unfortunately being a part of a Grand Pacific Tour, we were pressed for time and would recommend allowing yourself ample to time to see and experience all on offer.
We had a wonderful guide who was not only informative, but with such a love of history and the Maori legends that we were enthralled. We started with learning about their Kiwi breeding program and trying to spot a kiwi in their enclosure, then took the train around the area visiting the hot spring, mud pools and geysers, being lucky enough to see the 2 main one erupting. The Maori cultural site, demonstrations and looking in at their workshops were all very interesting and there is also a reasonably priced souvenir and artefact shop.

Thank Ann W

Entry fee initially seems pricey but includes a 90 minute tour and full access to the grounds. Had an informative tour of the Maori cultural site, with plenty of opportunity for questions. The eruption of the geysers is spontaneous (unlike other sites) but we were fortunate to turn up as The Prince was erupting and, sure enough, Pohutu followed although she teased us for a bit first! Be careful where you stand or you may get wet :)

Tena Koe Little Miss Sunshine!

Great tips and pointers there, our Pohutu definitely is a great feat of mother nature and she can indeed get our visitors soaked depending on where they are and how strong the wind is!

Happy Travels
