When I booked our room, the lady on the phone said she would put us in the "honeymoon" suite upstairs, as "it is quieter". We were happy with the way the room looked with the spa, however this all changed at about 9.45pm. After 30 mins of loud partying noise from the next room, along with opening and closing of the ranchslider and the ongoing sound of footsteps outside on the balcony, my partner went next door and politely asked them to “keep it down a little please”. On his return he advised there were 8 young people in their 20's drinking the inner bladder of wine casks off the floor. When the noise continued we felt that the staff at the resort needed to have a chat to them. This was around 10pm and all staff were finished for the night (desk only manned till 9.30pm). I walked down to see if I could knock on a door or contact someone but there were no afterhours contact details . I then spoke to the young people making the noise and asked how many people were staying in the room (hoping some would be just visitors). I was advised that there were 6 people staying in there and more people from their group in the room on the other side of us. We noticed that on the brochure for the resort it said they have "HUSH WINDOWS" and also said "GUARANTEED QUIET". It also said no cooked breakfast available in the weekend, which we thought was very inconvenient. We were awake till 2am with the noise. At 6am we were awoken with just normal noise of people getting up and moving around, however this brought home the fact that the walls were actually very thin so we had no chance of getting any extra sleep . We approached the manager the next day who advised that “they can't control the behaviour of the guests”, we advised that they should change their brochure to read "GUARANTEED QUIET DURING OFFICE HOURS". We got $20 off our room rate, better than nothing I guess. The late night before ruined our day as we were so tired and we moved to another resort, though a bit tired looking was quiet and peaceful.

We stayed here for 2 nights in March and really liked it. We stayed in a studio which had a spa bath, shower and small kitchen area. The room was spotlessly clean and there was free broadband access in the room.
The location was good, it was on the main road but just outside of town (where most accommodation seemed to be) even though this was just off the main road it was peaceful. Pak & Save and Countdown supermarkets just down the road. If I had to whinge about something it would only be that the spa bath extractor fan stayed on all the time and it was bit noisy when going to bed, this was soon rectified by switching off the circuit on the fuse box! Would recommend a stay at Emerald Spa.

Must have tried 10 motels before we saw this - and it was exhaustion that meant we took this rather expensive one ($135). A rather small room but with both a computer table and a dining table. A small kitchen area. The bed had good quality sheets and was comfortable. The bathroom had a huge jacuzzi and a walk in shower. There was free hi speed internet. The TV had no news channels. There was a swimming pool but we never used it. There was a laundry but on the expensive side ($5). Our room was permanently in the shade and so always felt cold. There was a fitness centre that was too cold to use. Overall not bad but we did stay 4 nights so that says something

We stayed here in a studio suite for 2 nights, and wished we could have stayed longer.
Spacious, immaculately clean, a wonderful spa, helpful staff, thoughtfully presented, everything we could have wished for!

We recently had an enjoyable stay at this property for two nights. We were due to arrive after normal reception hours, the staff went out of their way to make sure we were able to access our room. We booked a luxury studio suite and enjoyed the the well appointed room. The king size bed was very comfortable and the two person spa tub was a welcome treat after a long day sightseeing. A small fridge, microwave and eating utencils were provided as well.
The only negative problem that we experienced was the free internet service. The connection was so slow, it was not worth the trouble.

We couldn't find the motel on tripadvisor as it was new, but we decided to take risk as it was one of the few places with 2 bedroom apartments available at the time.
The apartment was adequately furnished, though the heating was definitely not adequate by any stretch of the imagination...
One of the two bedrooms was at the side of the building and had no windows or natural light in it at all. This was made worse by the fact that the sole bedside lamp didn't work as the extension cable it was plugged in to appeared to have suffered an electrical fire at some point judging by the scorch marks on it.
The road outside and the resort pool were very noisy, and despite the claims of "hush glazing" the windows seemed to be just plain single glazing, and noisy ones at that.
The overall experience was so poor we decided to cut our losses and leave after one night. Whilst talking to Tourism NZ at their Rotorua office we discovered that the motel hasn't been awarded a 5 star rating as their advertising claims, which the NZ Tourist Board were shocked to find the Emerald Spa claiming.
A promised refund for the extra night that we couldn't bear to take was never received, so ripped off as well!
All in all, the worst stay on our 4 weeks in NZ

RotoruaRata, Manager at Emerald Spa Motor Inn, responded to this review, 26 May 2008
This person is very unfair in his comments. At no time did he approach us with his concerns with the room. He did however come to reception approx one hour after checking in to return the damaged extention cable which was replaced with a brand new one. Surley this would have been an ideal opportunity to mention he was no happy with the accommodation and we would have offered an alternative option. There is also ceiling lights in the bedroom which he chose no to use. The glazing on the windows is most definitley not regular glass. It is insulted glass and does cut out 99% of the road noise. we are on a main road so you will always get a little bit of traffic noise. Many of our guests have commented on how quiet the rooms are. A refund was never ever PROMISED. As explained to this guest that as he had booked and paid online with a booking agent and it is clearly stated that a refund will not be given if a booking is cancelled 1 day prior to check in, we said would see what we could do but couldn't promise anything. His comments about us 'advertising' we have been 'awarded' 5 star is incorrect. We are self rated 5 star and have not advertised anything other than that. We did however get an email sometime later from another family who also stayed, who apologised when we explained that this gentleman had not come to us with his concerns and given us the opportunity to help them. She was under the understanding he had spoken to us.
