“Small rooms, definitely not the advertised "five star", and not a Resort”
Reviewed 1 August 2010

I wish we had checked the reviews for Emerald Spa on tripadvisor before we booked, as we could have saved ourselves a lot of grief by going elsewhere. When something is advertised as five star you expect it to be a little luxurious, but finding out they are "self rated" explains it all. We stayed in a Deluxe room that I would consider a studio motel room. Small and with no windows in the bathroom (the room we were in backed onto the motel next door). The hush glass does a good job in keeping exterior noise down, but noise from the neighbouring units was still a problem through the walls. Our room was dark as it was in the shade all day - a problem with the U shaped design of newer motels.

The heat pump didn't work so we had to call to reception and get a portable heater. Spa bath was nice, but difficult to get into and out of, with the plug on the far side, so you had to get into the bath to put in the plug, get out, then start the water running. A couple of the jets weren't working either. I agree with a couple of the other reviews in that the signs up everywhere inside the room did not help in making a welcoming environment.

Overall I get the feeling the managers aren't really cut out for the hospitality industry. Communication before we arrived was difficult. We booked some spa treatments via email and the manager forgot to transfer the booking over to another book, which meant when we arrived for our massages we were told someone else had the time booked, despite us having received a confirmation email The reception staff were wonderful in trying to rectify the situation, but considering it was our wedding anniversary, the damage was done.

Don't get fooled by the Resort in the title; Emerald Spa is a motel, four star at best, and not a good place to go for a romantic weekend away. Would be good for families and business trips though, when you don't expect to spend too much time in the room.

We booked a "Deluxe" two bedroom apartment for a week. After one night I queried with the desk if in fact we were in the right room. I was assured we were and they use the word "deluxe" to mean larger than the others.

When asked what was wrong I listed the items (such as curtains that did not fit windows, noisy heaters and fans, broken tiles in the bathroom and mould in the bathroom, a shower that squirts sideways when turned on) and primarily that it was not a deluxe room, nor was it particularly large.

I said we would check out. The manager then let rip advising me it was big enough for us and I was being picky and pathetic. I have never had such rude service from any provider in any country.

We moved down the road and stayed in a better room for more than $110 per night less.

We stayed in a one bedroom suite upstairs. It was exactly as advertised.
The suite was immaculate and furniture very comfortable - especially the bed and pillows! The furnishings were very nice & the hush glass worked a treat!
The huge spa was wonderful and the bathrobes supplied were nice and soft.
Broadband internet needed a cable to access - available from reception, we found the connection to be quite fast.
Housekeeping waited till we had left in the mornings before entering, which was considerate.
We used the guest Laundry & paid $5 for 2 washing powder sachets from reception. Quite reasonable price I thought for washing two loads plus using the dryer. There is only 1 washer & dryer so you have to wait if another guest is using it. It's open till 9.30pm so this was not a problem.
I would highly recommend a stay here based on my experience.

When I booked our room, the lady on the phone said she would put us in the "honeymoon" suite upstairs, as "it is quieter". We were happy with the way the room looked with the spa, however this all changed at about 9.45pm. After 30 mins of loud partying noise from the next room, along with opening and closing of the ranchslider and the ongoing sound of footsteps outside on the balcony, my partner went next door and politely asked them to “keep it down a little please”. On his return he advised there were 8 young people in their 20's drinking the inner bladder of wine casks off the floor. When the noise continued we felt that the staff at the resort needed to have a chat to them. This was around 10pm and all staff were finished for the night (desk only manned till 9.30pm). I walked down to see if I could knock on a door or contact someone but there were no afterhours contact details . I then spoke to the young people making the noise and asked how many people were staying in the room (hoping some would be just visitors). I was advised that there were 6 people staying in there and more people from their group in the room on the other side of us. We noticed that on the brochure for the resort it said they have "HUSH WINDOWS" and also said "GUARANTEED QUIET". It also said no cooked breakfast available in the weekend, which we thought was very inconvenient. We were awake till 2am with the noise. At 6am we were awoken with just normal noise of people getting up and moving around, however this brought home the fact that the walls were actually very thin so we had no chance of getting any extra sleep . We approached the manager the next day who advised that “they can't control the behaviour of the guests”, we advised that they should change their brochure to read "GUARANTEED QUIET DURING OFFICE HOURS". We got $20 off our room rate, better than nothing I guess. The late night before ruined our day as we were so tired and we moved to another resort, though a bit tired looking was quiet and peaceful.

We stayed here for 2 nights in March and really liked it. We stayed in a studio which had a spa bath, shower and small kitchen area. The room was spotlessly clean and there was free broadband access in the room.
The location was good, it was on the main road but just outside of town (where most accommodation seemed to be) even though this was just off the main road it was peaceful. Pak & Save and Countdown supermarkets just down the road. If I had to whinge about something it would only be that the spa bath extractor fan stayed on all the time and it was bit noisy when going to bed, this was soon rectified by switching off the circuit on the fuse box! Would recommend a stay at Emerald Spa.
