The Devon Hotel & Conference Center
Ranked #7 of 30 Hotels in New Plymouth
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 August 2014

I attended the New Zealand Biosecurity Institute Conference (aka NETS2014) at the end of July. The hotel is well appointed after a recent upgrade and provides excellent conference facilities for groups of up to 300. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. the location is close (walking distance) to the main street and restaurants of New Plymouth.

The hotel is good place to stay if visiting New Plymouth and surrounds.

I was wowed by this hotel. It had a simple elegance to it. From the foyer, bar and of course to the room. The room was well layed out and used the space to make it seem more roomy. Would have loved to have been there for a summer night and used the deck too!

We were there for a function in the conference facility which is also one of the best that I have used in a non main centre. The furniture was funky and made for a different atmosphere to the event.

We had a two night stay in the Devon Hotel In the most enormous and beautifully appointed room. Two king sized beds, two TVs, huge bathroom with spa bath and shower and a really comfortable seating area. All the staff were incredibly friendly and it is clear from the welcome we experienced that this family run hotel takes their guests comfort very seriously. We ate in the Marbles restaurant one night and were spoilt for choice, there was so much delicious food on offer! New Plymouth itself has so much to offer we could have stayed much longer. A walk along the shoreline and a visit to the mountain are a must and Pukekura park is amazing.

stayed overnight at The Devon, really friendly and helpful staff. Beds nice and clean and comfortable. Room a little hot but others would have liked that. we just turned the air conditioning down. downstairs bar staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble for them as we didn't want a huge meal, just a snack after a big ay. Thank you for a nice nights sleep. Price a little steep for the queen studio room.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to have something going for them. some have awesome views of the mountain.

Stayed for 3 night weekend. The room was really clean and well equipped. Nothing wrong with the bed. The restaurant downstairs was pretty good too.
The hotel itself is well situated and not too much of a walk to other pubs and restaurants. Enjoyed the stay and will not hesitate to return.

The beds were really soft, sunken in, old and very uncomfortable. The other two singles in the room didn't fair much better, but i resorted to sleep in one of those as they were better than the queen. I did complain about the bed to the staff. They weren't very apolgetic, asked me what I wanted to do and I said I want a new bed. Apparently they were all booked up so this was difficult. They got me to look at another room next door who had just checked out. The beds didn't feel any better so I had to resort to my existing room as no other options were given to me. I was with a small conference group of which two others complained of soft beds to me. The last time I had such an uncomfortable bed was when I stayed at a motor lodge paying less than $50 and the owner there was very very sorry and pulled out the stops to rectify the situation.
The buffet food at marbles was fantastic. But for me getting a good nights rest is more important!

Hi Jenine,
Thanks for joining us, and for your feedback. I'm pleased you loved Marbles Buffet, but not happy that you had a less than perfect sleep. All our beds are regularly replaced to try and assist just that. But, we are phasing out single beds in any of our rooms - with most guests preferring kings, queens, or doubles.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights during our holiday and enjoyed our stay. The rooms were reasonably well appointed and very clean. In fact the entire place was spotless and we loved the fairy lights adorning the trees along the roadside.
Our inital contact with the front desk staff was not as helpful as we first expected. When we mentioned the proximity to the swimming pool and screaming children I was met with indifference. Surprised that we weren't at least offered another room, having said that everyone else we encountered were lovely. Especially the team that delivered our room service.
Our room was spacious, very clean and the bed linen superb. Good size telly and the bathroom was a great size. A little odd not having a hair dryer or handtowels but apart from that had everthing we needed.
We decided against the dining room and had room service the second night and loved it! The staff that delivered our food were great and the antipasta platter was huge and very nice!
Overall a good place to stay and would definitly stay here again.
