Yum yum yum, this little bakery has the BEST almond croissants in town. Pick up a coffee in the attached café next door and head down to the beach.

Although the bakery is an absolute favourite of mine, my friend and I decided to try the cafe, which we found terribly disappointing. First my drink came out after around 10-15 minutes which was a coke float, she did admit she poured the wrong soda, but still its about a 1 minute job. Not only that but our meals came out about 10 minutes apart, how hard is it to time two meals together? So as I sat around hungrily eyeing up her pancakes I was missing half our conversation due to the obnoxiously loud wait staff singing and talking about their personal life. Which I was not at all impressed over.
Food was okay, pancakes great, the toastie not so much.

Discovered this little delight on our visit. Pastries great! Coffee good and a lovely atmosphere. Went bavk a few times.

Tried $10 brekki & pancakes. Not great. Baking is better.
Rather charge more and learn to make a poached egg.
Pancakes over decorated and too sweet. Separate sauce next time.

Recommend.

Here is the place to go for one of the great New Zealand culinary experiences.
Not the fancy stuff you get at Huka Lodge or Logan Brown or the French Cafe. No, this is basic - the pie.
With all the warnings we get these days about the inherent dangers of cholestrol-laden food and high sugar/salt content, there is something wonderfully reckless about ignoring such risks now and again.
And if you're wanting to be reckless, a pie is unbeatable.
But there are pies and pies. Someone wants to bring back the Georgie Pie, but is obviously romanticising something that when it was around was called the "gib board pie".
There are still pies filled with gristle and gelatinous bulk. Some are microwaved into a floppy mess. Others, pale and dry.
Not so at Piccolo Morso. Here, you have the great pleasure if going to the bakery and being tempted by a range of pastry delights...including the pies. You buy one and go to the cafe next door where they provide a plate and cutlery so you can sit down and indulge.
Even better to eat straight from the paper bag.
The steak pies are without peer. I have had to ration myself to a couple a week, but it wouldn't take much to make it a daily ritual.

I am always in search of the best kiwi pie and am most delighted to find one in New Plymouth. I tried their steak and mushroom pie and it was yummy! Real steak and not too salty (most pies are too salty). The crust is good too. They have other good specialty breads as well like foccacia, rye and croissant, all baked by the shop. Definitely will go back to try their other bakes.
