“Lots of stairs to the Beach.”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

there is about a hundred stairs to go down to the beach. Fine on the way down but very hard work on the way back up. great for exercise though. And be careful you don't get halfway down to find your path blocked by a seal, like I did. Had to veer off the stairs into the hillside to get round it. Back Beach is black sand but it is lovely down there to walk along the beach.

“Nature at its best”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

We love this wild beach on the fringe of New Plymouth. Kids and dogs love running down the huge sand dune at the New Plymouth end of the beach, and there are stairs to help you get back up if the climb is too daunting. The beach itself is ever-changing as the soft rocky cliffs regularly crumble onto the sand, so best not to climb on them. The beach is not patrolled and the surf is unpredictable, so this is a perfect beach for a walk and to enjoy the fresh air and the stunning views.

“A beach For all Seasons”
Reviewed 27 October 2013

This beach on the west coast of the north island is in the city of New Plymouth.
Great place to head to on a stormy day(you will probably almost have the beach to yourself).
Several small islands are just off the coast & these are inhabited by seals & bird life. At low tide you can walk to some of these islands.
This is a beach where you are allowed dogs on so very popular with dog owners.
In summer it's a popular place with families & when the surf is pumping surfers make there way to this beach. The sand is black & the water is crystal clear.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

A very good beach just out of town. There is a good car park just below the Peak with a very good vantage point. Good grassed picnic area. You see the beach below which nice to watch the tide come in through the Islands.
Also watch the Para gliders perform.
