I'm surprised to read the negative reviews. Went here with a work colleague on a Saturday night and the place was pumping. Had to wait a while for a table but no drama as we hadn't booked. Gave us a chance to try the many tequilas. The food here is designed to be shared, with the exception of the tacos obviously, so if you expecting to sit down with your own main meal think again. Reading the reviews I think people have missed the point of a good Mexican restaurant. Yes, there are large tables where you can sit with others, but there are also small ones. Yes it's loud and not brightly lit but that's the point. The servings aren't small, you are supposed to order say 3 thing each and share them. This isn't the place to go and order nachos, order that at a pub. This isn't a place to go and have an intimate meal. If you want good Mexican food with fresh ingredients, good atmosphere and a cold beer, then this is the place for you.

ill start with a positive comment, great atmosphere, amazing interior, but thats about it.

meal portions are so small that you have to order at least 2 dishes to satisfy your hunger. food are of average quality. i left the restaurant hungry and paid a hefty bill. staff needs more training. seats are uncomfortable.

So many things to say about this place. Horrible seating - you have to share a cheap bench seat picnic table with strangers so no chance to sit back and relax. Bad lighting had to strain my eyes to read the menu which had a single candle to illuminate it.

Went there to get nachos as this is a mexican dish? Isnt it? They dont serve them ??? Very strange.

That was only the beginning.

Ordered two mains and two starters which didnt arrive in the usual order.. mains first.. it was very confusing as one of the mains was scallops and one was squid - the scallops came and the portion was less than an entree size anywhere else. We actually thought it was a type of complimentary dish you sometimes get when waiting for your entree. Not impressed at all.. first time ever we have left a restaurant hungry. All dishes are VERY small portion size, no chance of sharing them with others unless you want one mouthful and quality is only average. Having been to other mexican restaurants - one in rotorua last year this place was ridiculous and doesnt compare. They have serious problems.

The impression this place gives is they are trying to cram as many ppl in as they can, expensive average dishes which are way too small, and all waiting staff are young and inexperienced. Looks like profit is their number one priority, dont worry about the food and customer comfort and satisfaction. 1 star.

Just opened in New Plymouth, Mexico ticks all the boxes for a lively place to have a meal. Small tapas sized plates of food to share. Food is fresh and delicious, with a good variety of Mexican style options with a modern twist. Priced reasonably. Not a great wine selection; seems beer must be the ideal accompaniment to Mexican flavours. The decor is really cool -lots of pictures, lots of vibrant colours but steers away from being too cliche Mexican.
Tables are communal but there are many sizes to suit your group and if you come in as a couple, it was fine to share a table. Bench seats I am not a fan of, especially when you are sharing the table but it was a conversation starter! Service was helpful and attentive, food was quick -felt a little rushed, certainly not a place to go for a romantic lingering meal. Overall a great experience which I intend to repeat. Would be perfect for a quick meal before a show or a casual dinner anytime.

This restaurant has great potential with a fabulous atmosphere and decor and good service but is let down by a couple of things. One is the bench seating with no backs which though trendy, is plain and simply damn uncomfortable for any length of time. The second is the menu which is limited and though the sharing plates are a good idea I felt they were pretty small. The food itself was tasty though the churros were oily and slightly uncooked in the center. Not being able to book is also a pain and on the whole New Plymouth people don't respond well to this idea which works better in big cities. If the menu were expanded and some larger individual meal options were included and consideration paid to better seating, it may do very well. I would be concerned about it being able to sustain interest beyond the first 6 months otherwise.
