“Fabulous lakeside Bach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014

Stayed here for two nights with my husband and two boys aged 10 and 12. Gorgeous original Bach that has been done up to be very comfortable and modern inside with everything you would need. We stayed in no. 3 which was on the lake and to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine while the kids ran around on the beach and skimmed rocks across the lake was just bliss. The view across the lake from the lounge and bedroom was just gorgeous. Sue was a wonderful host and did everything to make sure we were comfortable. Definitely recommend!

To you and the last few reviews that I haven't responded to. We are so glad that you find our little lodge a lovely place to stay. We know the location is tops and love the idea of guests being able to experience what its like to stay in the quintessential "kiwi bach". We continue to improve on the facilities within the rooms to make the stay more comfortable without losing the soul of the original lodge.

We rented a lakefront unit with a kitchen (sorry, can't remember the number). The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. The location is outside the city and is peaceful. It was a lovely place to stay - unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for outdoor activities, but at least we had a nice room to stay in and watch the rain!

Only unit 5 was available at the timing of booking.

We arrived much earlier than stated and luckily Sue was there to check us in. We departed hastily for our 5 pm Lake Taupo cruise and almost didn't come back in time for the sunset.

While it is not a lakefront unit, unit 5 is equally lovely. I like it that
1) Short walk to lakefront deck with great lake view! Gorgeous sunset!
2) Can see the stars so clearly at night.
3) All units are standalone. No such things as noisy neighbour due to thin walls etc;
4) Big bathroom (Shower only though)
5) Have all you need to cook up a good breakfast (with pans to fry bacon and eggs, oven to heat up croissants) and cleaning tools provided.
6) We can park next to our unit.

But
1) many moths were attracted to the lights (normal lights, laptop lights, handphone lights etc) at night. So, we switched off all the lights and retired early. We only saw the insecticide on the top of the cabinet the next day.
2) None of us managed to get WIFI connection on any of our devices during the stay.

I am so pleased we chose the lodge over other accommodation in the center of Taupo. The access to the lake is unprecedented and exceptionally private. We were travelling with our son who is a busy toddler and it is a real joy to wake up in the morning and walk straight to the clean sandy lake edge. The Bach is clean and well appointed with all you need. A truly lovely place to stay.

Once again we have just experienced the best Taupo has to offer. The Fishing Lodge at Waitahanui on Lake Taupo is indeed the most enjoyable and relaxing spot to stay at the Lake. We have stayed many times, and in three of the five 'rooms'. The two right on the lake front are true bliss, but even Room 1 beside the shop where we have just stayed is a perfect place for a holiday. The lake is so close, a wee wander into the water. Watching the sunset enjoying a wine and BBQ tea a few steps from your 'room/s' was memorable. You can easily ride the sealed trail which hugs the lake into Taupo township - only an easy 15km in. Enjoy a latte or lunch and 15 km ride back. Reward yourself with a swim on return. Sue and Roger are wonderful hosts - friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble! Even finding extra books that my hubby might like to read, thanks Sue. We can't recommend the Fishing Lodge more highly - enjoy a kiwiana lakeside holiday. We'll certainly be back there later in the year.

Room Tip: The lake front Rooms have wonderful views from the bedroom (Room 3) and lounge area (Rooms 3 and 4...

Thanks for your great review Audrey. Its always nice to see guests return and even though a lakefront cottage wasn't an option this time, its great to see you were able to enjoy the bbq area and take some great photos.

I had great expectations of Waitahanui Lodge after discovering their website and we were not disappointed. I thoroughly recommend chalet 4 in particular, which is virtually on the beach of Lake Taupo. With plenty of glass and patio doors to the lounge, you can enjoy the great view from the settee or while sitting outside on the small terrace. There is a large timber deck for general use if you want a picnic for instance - again with the same great view. If the sun is too strong, no. 4 also has a lovely small, shady furnished courtyard at the back.
The chalet is really spacious with everything you could possibly need in the kitchen area.
The icing on the cake though is the owner, Sue, who is such a lovely, genuine person who cannot do enough to make your stay complete. We arrived after an unfortunate incident and were extremely grateful to Sue for her genuine sympathy and kindness. For us, should we ever be in Taupo again, there is only one place we would even consider staying - Waitahanui Lodge.

Room Tip: Try to get room 4 if you can, it has the best view.

I've just read your review and you've really made my day! Thankyou for your very kind remarks about our lodge and my hospitality. I only did what anyone would do under the circumstances. I hoped I was able to turn your unfortunate experience into a nice memory of Taupo.

Spent 3 lovely days here, totally relaxing and peaceful - Absolutely lake side, simple 'Kiwi batch' style cabins super clean, tidy and comfortable, fitted out with every thing you need for self catering. Good beds with nice linen and towels. This place achieves 'the point of difference' having all those little extra's, free laundry, kayaks, access to the lodges herb garden and more. This combined with Hosts that are super friendly and helpful make this lodge very special. Being very reasonably priced, makes it all very affordable. I was in NZ on leave from my Resort Management job in Fiji and was very impressed. I can highly recommend this Lodge, you will not be disappointed.

Wow, that's am awesome review of our Lodge John. and holds even more kudos because of your resort management history. As you are in the industry you know how important it is to make your guests feel at home. Mostly I think the Lodge does it for us with its uniqueness and location. You also were a perfect guest who made the most of your stay here. I hope you can come back someday.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Waitahanui Lodge is all about the kiwi bach experience. The original lodge was built in 1932 as a fishing lodge that by today's standards would have been fairly basic. In the 1950's a new lodge was built right by the lake's edge and close to the world renowned Waitahanui River. With renovations and upgrading the Lodge has up to date facilities and caters for today's travellers, yet the "kiwiana soul" of the Lodge remains. The lodge consists of 5 well equipped, self catering cottages, accommodating up to 5 guests. All linen is supplied. Absolute lakefront location can be enjoyed from two of our cottages while the others are just a few steps away. Our wonderful lakeside terrace provides the perfect spot for a barbecue or simply to enjoy a great sunset. Our on site tackle shop has waders and rods for hire plus all the fishing tackle needed to fish our local rivers for trout. ... more   less
