We arrived early before the dam opens (10am, 12pm, 2pm in winter and also at 4pm in summer), checked out the potential spots and decided on the lower viewing platform to watch the water rise. It was incredible to watch and a great way to spend a good half hour :)

This was a cool experience, even better that it's 100% free. We arrived 20 minutes before the dam was scheduled to open so we could have a look around and scout out the best spot to watch it from. There are two observation points, both a short walk from the carpark. We thought the lower one had better views but both are worth seeing. The other place to view the damn opening from is the road bridge. This gives a great view of the opening and first area flooding, but you should definitely rush to the lower viewing platform as you can see a lot more!

For those who are less mobile the bridge provides a great experience while being wheel chair accessible and only a short distance from the carpark.

The dam opens 3 times a day in winter at 10am 12 noon and 2pm, in summer it also opens at 4pm. So arrive early to get the best spot!

Father in law put us onto this place that I didn't know existed. Very exciting to hear the countdown warning then to see the actual release of the water turning a small stream through rocks into a raging torrent. Will recommend to friends, great site to see, and its free..

Check the times when the gates are opened (usually two to three times a day) and position yourself early enough to get the best pics. We had a look at all three points from which you can take photos and would advise you to start with the bridge itself and then go on to the lower outlook. The higher outlook is a bit far away and it takes longer to get there.

they were very impressed with the turbulence of the falls when the flood gates opened. Our wheel chair friend could not negotiate enough of the track to get the best view, so he stayed on the road bridge overlooking the rapids.
