We stayed three nights at the Baycrest as part of a two week holiday in New Zealand. This was, in so many ways, the highlight of our trip. We had a tough time deciding whether to take the ground floor suite with hot tub or upstairs with spa and view of the lake and Mount Ruapehu. We opted for the ground floor/ hot tub and we were happy with our choice, also no carrying suitcases up and down stairs was a bonus. There is also a fully equipped bar and thermal-heated pool on the property, and in the rooms no small detail has been spared: with everything from a plunger and fresh coffee sachets, to a comfortable couch and flat screen TV, a fantastic free internet connection and Neville, our host, could not have been more helpful with advice about where to eat, what to see and do. We recommend Baycrest for couples, families and groups as it really does do it all.

We have stayed at the Baycrest a few times in the past but this was our first visit since 2001. The motel has been really well maintained and the rooms felt fresh and modern. They are a good size, with a big comfy bed, sofa, table & chairs and a small kitchen area. We chose a ground floor unit with a thermal pool you can fill, set in a small garden. We could see the lake from the garden although the upper rooms probably have better lake views - but then you forego the thermal pool and get a spa bath instead. There is a very small, but very nice, swimming pool, also thermal with a constant temperature like a warm bath - we had a swim in it even though it was raining followed by a soak in the thermal pool in the garden of our unit - bliss.

The motel is on a side street just off the main lake front road and is a 5 minute drive into the centre of town and you could also walk in to Taupo along the lake front. We didn't have any problem with traffic noise at all. I have stayed in a few other places in Taupo over the years but like Baycrest the most because of the thermal swimming pool and the private thermal tubs in the gardens of the ground floor units.

I should also mention that the manager was very helpful when I had to change my booking, responding straight away to my e-mail and sorting out the new dates without any problems.

My husband and I stayed at the Baycrest Lodge/Motel for two nights. Our room had a balcony with views of Lake Taupo. The room was very clean, modern and we had a very comfortable stay. We also had a spa bath which was great to relax in at the end of the day. The motel was very quiet. The owners made us very welcome and were very helpful. A great place to stay.

We had 2 nights at Baycrest and thought was great value for money. We had upstairs room with great views of the lake and snow capped Mt Ruapehu in the distance. Room was great size with kitchenette, king bed and sofa lounge, good size bathroom with spa. Balconey was lovely to sit out and enjoy the views across the lake. Owners are very friendly and helpful, and thing we enjoyed most was the thermal heated pool. Pool temperature was around 35 degrees and beautifully landscaped with large rocks, plants etc. Didn't use the room spa, because was so lovely soaking in the heated pool. Would thoroughly recommend staying in this very clean and comfortabe hotel.

Big raps on this place. The obvious plus is the private thermal hot tubs which are attached to the ground floor units, with 50 degree Celsius fresh thermal water available from a tap to fill it. Otherwise, the unit was tastefully decorated and modern, had a plasma TV, great size bathroom, good size kitchenette and a king size bed. This place also supplied plunger coffee and some cookies, which were demolished every morning.

Although it is close to State Highway 1, we were unaffected by the road noise and slept really well each night. The owners Neville and Sandy were really friendly and always helpful and forthcoming with advice and ideas for activities and sightseeing.

We stayed here for nearly 2 weeks and just had a brilliant time.

Really friendly and helpful owner, room we stayed in had a great view of lake, was warm (underfloor heating), spacious, clean, comfortable. The spa pool was restful and while there's a bit of noise from the main road, it's also handy to everything. The service was absolutely outstanding.

  • Liked — The owner, the view, the spacious room and the price
  • Disliked — Lack of wireless internet access
