It is difficlut to put in words what an exceptional place this is. From the stunning garden setting which runs along the shore of a trout laden river. The place is beautifully appointed with a hunting and fishing theme throughout. Open fire places throughout are brilliant in the winter. There are numerous sitting areas that you can choose have your meals either in or outside. Service fantastic and staff brilliant. Highly recommend.

Huka Lodge must be the most famous place to stay in New Zealand. The Queen has stayed there, and other royals. The setting on the banks of the Waikato River is exceptional. The main lodge is warm, welcoming and beautifully decorated with Scottish and fishing and hunting themes and colours reflecting those of the river. The rooms are pretty well perfection.

We had two dinners, one outstanding and the other somewhat less than we had hoped for. The New Zealand wines were excellent. At breakfast, you would expect to be greeted and have table cleared and re-set, but one morning these things didn't happen. Don't order soft-boiled eggs, because they may come out hard.

The owners have a South African connection and like to display game trophies. We are fond of animals but less so of stuffed heads, and a gun-rack made from gazelle's feet is a bit off.

Huka Lodge is a stunning place by any standard, but it needs some fresh thinking to keep its stellar reputation.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

From the moment we arrived, to our departure 24 hours later, we were absolutely delighted with our Huka Lodge experience!

The location is stunning, the ambience of the Lodge both classy and tasteful. Every member of staff is attentive, courteous and thoughtful - they seem to anticipate your needs or wants before you even realise them yourself!

We were welcomed out front before we had even switched off the engine of our car, and made very welcome with a fine glass of champagne in front of a crackling open fire while our vehicle was whisked away and our luggage taken to our room. A short while later, when we were feeling totally chilled out and relaxed, a staff member outlined the services and amenities of the Lodge and escorted us to our large comfortable room..

My husband had organised the night at Huka Lodge as a surprise birthday present for me. Every staff member knew of this and at various times of the day and evening wished me a happy birthday. Plus, from the management, there was even a beautifully decorated birthday cake , chilled bottle of champagne and personal note awaiting us in the room.

Overall, the accommodation was awesome, the hosted drinks and nibbles before dinner a wonderful way to mingle with other guests, and all meals were top class.

Not long after our arrival, we were invited to choose one of several locations for our evening meal, plus breakfast the following morning. So many choices! We selected the Trophy Room for dinner, and breakfasted in a cosy European styled outdoor area, with artfully manicured hedges, overlooking a tumbling waterfall and beautifully manicured grounds. Rugs over the back of each seat ensured we were not chilled, along with two blazing wood-fed braziers on each side of our table.

Overall, we were made to feel very, very special, I would highly recommend Huka Lodge to both local and overseas visitors. The Lodge is worthy of its fine international reputation and as a Kiwi I am proud to say it is 'right up there' and worth every cent.

We stayed at Huka Lodge in November 2012 as the last stop in our honeymoon. What a perfect way to end our trip. Taupo is beautiful, the Lodge exudes warmth and hospitality, and Louis and Rudy took such care to make our stay memorable, relaxing and romantic. We had private dinners every night - each in locations more romantic than the evening before. We loved sitting by the fire for a drink after dinner, pre-dinner cocktails with the other guests, and exploring the lake, and hiking along the river. The extra touches of tradition (the bagpipes) and personal attention to detail made the experience unforgettable. Thank you to the whole team at Huka for helping us to end our honeymoon in such a wonderful way.
