“A superb stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2009

After extensive research--including reading previous posts here on TripAdvisor, my wife and I made the most excellent decision to book a stay at The Pillars.
What a lovely place! What a lovely couple!
John and Ruth could not have done more to make us feel welcome in their beautiful home--which they resurrected from disrepair and molded into a showplace of their own making. (I don't know if the attached photos do it justice). The rooms are comfortable and large; all the appointments are first-class.
John provided a strategy that enabled us to do the three things we most came to Taupo for: a boat ride on the lake, some quality time at a thermal pool and a jaunt to a Maori settlement (he suggested a cultural program with lunch rather than dinner at the Whakarewarewa Thermal Village in nearby Rotorua, which allowed the rest of our plan to be accomplished within two short days).
And they were too-short days, as well! Ruth is an excellent cook (her breakfasts are terrific) and both John and Ruth are just fun to talk with.
A greta place to stay!

We had a wonderful stay at the Pillars. Hosts John and Ruth were entirely welcoming and helpful, and proved to be interesting, informed conversational companions.

The house was immaculate, well away from the noise and hubbub of central Taupo in a quiet rural suburban neighborhood. The rooms were light and spacious, with excellent beds and pillows, supplied with complimentary bottles of wine and refrigerated beer and filtered water. Also, homemade biscuits.

The yard and gardens were extensive and lovingly tended, the back yard designed to invite wandering through the gardens and copses, to discover the frog pond and admire the many flowers. A tennis court was discreetly located in the center of the yard but planted so it did not detract from the aesthetics of the landscape. And the dark pool, with its perfectly cool water, was the ideal tonic after a day of car travel and hot sulfurous sightseeing.

And lastly, breakfast extensive and well-prepared. Our schedule permitted only a short stay of one night, but if next time we will stay longer.

It was one of the highlights of our trip through New Zealand.

I chose to book a couple of nights stay at the Pillars based upon the reviews on trip advisor. We were welcomed by John and Ruth who own the Pillars and then taken to our room. We were told that we had been upgraded and had a different room. The room was beautiful and the views were outsatnding. All the rooms would have had wonderful views and when we return to Taupo next we will return. John and Ruth are excellent hosts, the breakfast's were wonderful and it was nice to sit down at breakfast and talk to your hosts. They both had a great knowledge of the area so if you were struggling with things to do (which would be unlikely) they would be able to help.
Ruth also explained that they have weddings at the Pillars and showed us some photo's, if you stay be sure to ask. Oh before I forget, if you don't like cars and travel by helicopter then your in luck as you can land at the Pillars.

We only had a one night stay here during our whirlwind 3 week tour of New Zealand but wish we had spent more time there. The place is just delightful, beautifully decorated with lovely grounds. Our hosts, John & Ruth couldn't have made us more welcome. We arrived in a small rainstorm and they insisted on giving us tea to "warm us up". The room had more than the usual amenities and they even supplied a bottle of wine for us to drink in our room. Breakfast (included) was great.

The location is good if you have a car as it's a short distance out of Taupo but that makes it even nicer as it is so quiet and tranquil, surrounded by farmland.

We stayed at the Pillars for 2 nights during our 3 week stay in New Zealand. We found the place to be very calm. The house and garden are beautiful, The house is very airy and inviting. It is immaculately clean and well appointed. The colors that Ruth and John have chosen fit perfectly with the house.

Our room was large and bright. It overlooked the garden. The bed was extra large king and very comfortable. There was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived .We thought was a very nice touch. There is also wifi internet access(no charge).

Breakfast was buffet style(hot and cold). We liked Ruth and John. We found them to be very warm, friendly people and enjoyed their company at breakfast.

We highly reccommend a stay with them.

We stayed four nights at this excellent B&B. Of the four rooms, we stayed in the Pillars suite. This has a huge bedroom, an en suite bathroom large enough to be a separate room and which has a raised Jacuzzi in a corner with a view, and a large private balcony overlooking the garden and with a sunset view. The room and bathroom are carpeted wall-to-wall. The several-acre grounds are beautifully landscaped and maimtained. About a nine minute drive to the center of town and restaurants.
Hosts John and Ruth Boddy are terrific. Exceptionally helpful, well informed and intelligent. Breakfast conversation with them is a distinct pleasure. The breakfast food is fairly simple. Ruth will do laundry for you and there is an iron in the room. Highly recommended.

We stayed two nights at the Pillars and really enjoyed ourselves. The hosts are very friendly and our room was fantastic as is their home. It was very nice to have a bottle of wine left in our room so we shared it with them because we got on so well. The hosts are very helpful and drove us to the restaurants each evening. I would definitely recommend a stay here
