Tried hard to find fault but couldn't - It was excellant - - The Spa was great - .The Linen very clean- the Cooking facilities in our studio unit were perfect. No problem with the shower and bathroom. Staff welcoming and friendly - will certainly stay again next time we go through Taupo

Room Tip: Especially if you plan to be out and about doing "Taupo" things a studio unit is fairly pr...

We stayed for one night in this Motel. Whilst it was not unpleasant I could not recommend it without some caveats. The one very positive thing about the Karaka Tree is the hot pool attached to most rooms, we enjoyed this immensely even though the spa jets failed to operate, but I fear this is all the Motel trades on. The De Bretts hot pools are just up the road and they provide a more all round experience of hot pools if thats what your after. The decor is from the 80`s. The sink and cupboards in the bathroom are tiny, the shower belongs in a museum, the floor is vinyl and carpet and the kitchen units are not really useable without making a mess also, there was no wi-fi working when we visited. In my opinion the units are overpriced.
If you don`t mind quaint and want the experience of private hot pools(even though an upstairs unit can see you!) then this could be the place for you.
Our unit was clean so no issues there.

its a motel like you have hundreds and sometimes you are lucky to find a gem among them. his was it, the room was clean though and the beds were good. So if you just want to spent a night, there's not reason why you should n't pick this one.

We stayed at the Karaka Tree for 6 nights. The new Managers were very welcoming and friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable, there is some updating needed but very liveable for the time we were there. It was a very good base for our day trips to areas around Taupo and beyond. Would stay again when we return to Taupo, love the views of the mountains and the lake, very peaceful.

I arrived in Taupo on a Saturday night with no vacancy signs everywhere so I was very lucky to get 2 nights at Karaka tree through wotif. I paid $145 for Saturday and $125 for Sunday night. Prices in NZ have been dearer everywhere that I expected so this is not too bad. I was upgraded to the 1 br unit which was huge for me.
There were a few little things- chipped tea cup, no inside handle on shower. Spa area is worn as others say. TV is small but no big deal to me.
Staff friendly.

We've stayed there previously, but the place seems to have down hill! We were in a King spa 1 bedroom on the ground floor. The outdoor spa was scratched, old and dirty. There were nails sticking out of the deck, which I managed to cut my foot on. The shower was dirty & the decor was old & worn. Our airpoints email stated we had a check out of 2pm, but when Craig went to confirm this, we were told this was incorrect and we had 1/2 an hour to check out - no apologises, no nothing! Not impressed...

The main plus was your own private hot spa pool in your bathroom! It's not as bad as what the other reviews say. The bathroom paint and wood is getting damaged from the moisture. And the set up of the room wasn't good, there is carpet between the spa & shower, and the carpet has suffered obvious damage from being trampled by wet feet.
Otherwise it was actually very clean. We walked around and our socks were still white! (Compared with 5 star hotels I've been to that turns my socks black!) the products they use isn't good quality hence they don't last very long, which is a shame cos it makes the room looks tired and shabby. Still comfortable and very liveable.
Priced at NZD $91 for a studio room was reasonable
