The forest walk on the north side of the highway has recently been upgraded and is now up to the easiest standard-almost wheelchair accessible although there a slight gradients. The walk takes you though a range of forest vegetation including magnificant old growth native podocarp trees, fungal chains and rings in season, and younger vegetation around the military graves from the colonial era. The walk on the south side side has a range of historic sites including an old road alignment spread along it.
