This resort is extremely well-run, the apartments are modern and comfortable and well equipped for self-catering. Most of the apartments overlook the swimming pool with patio doors for easy access. There is also a large villa which overlooks Lake Taupo and which would be ideal for 2 couples sharing. In addition to the swimming pool (which was rather cool when we stayed) there is a lovely, warm spa pool, great for an evening soak. We reserved a one-bedroom apartment with sofa bed in the lounge for 3 adults but found this apartment rather small. The management were extremely helpful and offered our adult daughter an apartment for herself at a very reasonable price. The Lake Taupo area is great and very pretty. It is a good base for visiting nearby attractions. The resort is a couple of miles from the centre of Taupo so a car is necessary but the area is so quiet and peaceful it is worth the journey.

Room Tip: Ground floor apartments have easy access to the swimming pool. Go for the villa if you want somethin...

Thank you so very much for your kind comments and constructive observations. We are happy that you enjoyed our complex and the facilities that it offers. We always try to maintain the swimming pool at a constant 28 - 30c temp, and run the mineral pool at around 40c and always find that it is great for soaking away those back pains and other weary issues.
The One Bedroom Units are compact but do seem to cater for 3 adults, but for extra comfort it can be more advantageous to take our 2 bedroom family unit. Although it does not have lake views, it can cater for a family with comfort and spaciousness.

Be sure to enquire about our Lakefront Luxury Apartments/Villa the next time you are staying with us and I am sure we can make your stay even better.

SO thank you for staying and we do hope to see you again in the future.

We stayed for three nights and loved every minute of it. Stayed in studio with limited lake view which was spacious, clean with nice big bath tub in with jet spa stocked up with luxury toiletries which reflected the natural beauty of New Zealand. Then changed to one bedroom with direct lake views, which was good as well. Erin was great host when it came to solve little misunderstanding prior to our stay. From cleanliness to the attention to detail which can be the breaking point of hospitality industry, this hotel and wonderful hosts ticked all the boxes I expect. Breakfasts were nicely cooked and delivered to our room at the time we requested, all the additional Christmas day info was gathered thoughtful at reception. We had a yummiest special Christmas cake as a surprise, well appreciated. I would highly recommend this hotel whoever desires a problem free holiday in this rather pretty location of Lake Taupo.

Thank you so very much for your review. We are so happy that you had an amazing time here with us at The Reef Resort. One think we take very seriously is our cleanliness, and we have to always thank our cleaning staff for doing such an amazing job. As much as Erin and I are managers here and ultimately get the credit for having a great stay such as you did, we are part of a great team here that starts from the top with our boss being so pro-active in improving our product all the time and having a great bunch of people on our housekeeping team. So we will be sure to pass on your comments and experiences here to them. We are especially glad that you enjoyed our cooked breakfast. It is something that we are rather proud of.
SO again thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again in the future.

We were here for two nights and the room had everything that we hoped for. We were on the same level as reception so had fantastic views of the lake. Erin and Amos made us feel very welcome and were very helpful throughout our stay. During our travels around NZ we have picked up common phrases and the two for here would be 'cool' and 'awesome'. Thanks for two great nights. Hope to be back.

18 days, 11 cities and 3 countries!! My trip around the South Pacific was short by most 3-country trek standards but it was well planned and allowed me to enjoy pretty much EVERY activity I wanted to experience while there. I promised many of the companies I booked with an honest TripAdvisor review and here I am making good on that promise. Of course everyone was not excellent but mostly everyone was!!
I must say I was not as impressed with the Reef Resort. I initially reserved a lake view room from the hotel website but my travel partner found a more affordable rate on Agoda.com so we changed the room. It was a one-bedroom room but the couch was extremely uncomfortable (not a big deal for us) and there was no view. I realize I did not book a lake view room but there are quite a few other hotels in Taupo in which all the rooms have a lake view. Also there is a building between the main building of hotel rooms and the lake. I had a misunderstanding of how the hotel was appointed and so I wanted to make that clear in this review. There are other hotels closer to town with unobstructed to views of the lake. Do not even bother with a partial view room from this hotel as you have to do so much twisting and turning to see the lake it’s easier to just walk to it.
The staff was nice and the room was great, do not get me wrong, so please take the above description as it is intended. I was expecting something different but there was nothing substandard about The Reef Resort. The parking is a bit tight and the way they do wifi is a bid tedious (they give you little slips of paper with the access code but each code only allows for a limited amount of data transfer thus not only do you have to keep entering the password but you have to use numerous passwords and the wifi is not consistent). You only need to ask the front desk for more access and they will give it to you, no problem. The access to the lake is easy and all of the closer hotels I spoke of at the beginning of this review are across the street from the lake. Loved the spa bathroom. We got caught in the rain in our tramp to Huka Falls via the thermal spring. After an hour of tramping in the rain the spa tub was just what we needed.

Thank you for your comprehensive review, and we really do appreciate your honesty and what you had to say. We of course will always strive to rectify issues and concerns that our guests have and thank you for bringing to our attention the issues that you had during your stay with us.

On the positive side we have recently upgraded our WIFI/Internet access so that now the coverage is very much improved and there is no longer a requirement for the access codes as have been needed in the past.

We have also addressed all our room descriptions and updated photos of each unit so that there is no confusion as to what a unit is and what views it has. In your case the room you booked does state that is has only partial lake views, which is why you got the cheaper room rate than the room you originally booked. We have made sure that there are plenty of photos of our property and so all prospective guests can get the best idea possible of what our complex has to offer and how it is laid in relation to the lake side.

Thank you again for you review and we wish you all the best for the festive season.

Had a fantastic stay here.

The customer service was second to none, and we also upgraded so we had a second room (there were 3 of us and 2 stayed in initial room and I had a room for myself)

The decor is modern, very clean and I LOVED the thermal hot tub (they have another pool too, warmed up geothermically but the hot tub was 100% thermal water).

All staff really went out of their way to make our stay as excellent as possible. They were also a great help in giving us advice of what to do in the area, directions too.

Would HIGHLY recommend!

Room Tip: For 3 or more adults, the one bed suite maybe a little small, go for 2 suites like we did, or the 3...

Thank you so very much for your kind feed back and positive comments about your stay here with us. We are especially glad that you enjoyed the heated pool and mineral thermally heated pool also. You will have noted hopefully the new repaint that we had given the mineral pool and we are especially pleased with the results. Watch this space because we hoping to repaint the main swimming pool in the next 12 months.

Thank you again and we hope to see you again.

Our visit to New Zealand has occurred with little planning and in all we have been very lucky in our hotel choices. The Reef Resort is a great example of that with a great range of delightfully decorated and tastefully appointed rooms and surrounds. It is in the ideal situation beside Lake Taupo with hot beach frontage and perhaps a 20 minute walk or three minute drive to the CBD. Great TV's (ours one bedroom apartment had a second TV in the bedroom) both with Sky and free WiFi meant all the essentials were taken care of. Swimming pool at 30 degrees Celsius and a geothermal heated spa at 40 were spot on for washing off the rigours of the day.

Add to the package operators that obviously love what they are doing and committed to ensuring that their guests are well taken care of and provided with great tourist tips and directions we were only sorry that we were here for only a short stay...but we will be back and we know exactly where we will be staying! All in all it is very difficult to find anything that reflects negatively about this property and it's not very often that a motel gets five out of five for everything but this one did.

Room Tip: The rooms have lake views but you are only a few steps away from the action anyway as the resort bac...

Hello there JummaBee.

WOW!! What can we say but thank you, thank you, thank you. We are so humbled by you kind comments and how much you enjoyed your stay with us. Erin and I always strive to make sure that all our guests' stay is as if it were ourselves staying. Therefore want everyone to have the best time possible. We can't take all of the credit though and have to acknowledge that without having such a great boss, and cleaning staff who are just as passionate about doing what they do, we would not be the accommodation provider we are today.

Again thank you so much, and be sure to let us know when you are in town as we would love to have you stay with again. Thank you again for your humbling review and comments.
