“No Shower”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2008

Booked in looking forward to a hot shower as had been fishing and needed to get the smell of fish off me. Turned the shower on and just a trickle of water. Went to the front desk and told the person there, who came and fiddled with the rose. Told me that was what I needed to do, and left. I turned the shower on again and found that unless I turned the water on to full hot and pushed the lever in hard, it would just turn itself off. Ok - figured that one out but then I could only have it on so hot that I couldn't stand under the water and as soon as I tried turning the heat down, it just turned itself off. Reported this to management in the morning and no offer of another shower to use, discount, or a free night, any or all of which I would consider to be good customer service. Would not recommend it as a place to stay despite the great location.

Fantastic place,

Spa, sauna, heated swimming pool, right on the lake with great
views of the mountains.

Clean and comfortable accomodation, with a wholesale and Mcdonalds within 20 metres and about 50 metres in to the town centre.

We ( an Auckland Sunday football team ) have stayed in two of the front units every year for the last 5 years. Prices have increased slightly over the years but at $150 for a unit, sleeping 5 people we are more than happy.

And we will be returning this November !

We spent a night at the Sahara and that was more than enough. The manager's customer service skills leave a lot to be desired - actually talking to visitors when they check in would be a good start!

The room was a good size but could do with a really good clean and refresh. The room was very dusty, the duvets are old and sad - even if they have been recently cleaned it would be hard to tell (they didn't look it). The kitchen area and fridge were not clean, and the cracked tiles throughout the kitchen and bathroom didn't help. The furniture and decor are in desperate need of an update: nothing says sloppy louder than chipped and scratched walls patched with paint that doesn't match the original colour, a flithy door, spider webs, and mismatched covers on old furniture. The exeterior of the motel reflectes the inside - neglected gardens, sad paintwork, and the toilet brush sitting beside the outside pond was an interesting ornamental touch.

The location is great - very convenient to town and to the lake, but the whole place really needs a total refurbishment, and the management needs to look very carefully at the level of customer service they provide. We weren't made to feel welcome, we weren't thanked for our custom, and basically spent as little time there as we could.

Overall NOT RECOMMENDED - you can get much better value for $160 a night in Taupo, and can be a lot more comfortable for a lot less.

Extremely disappointing. Unit was filthy - kitchen floors not cleaned from previous tenants, many long hair strands on bathroom floor, bedding old, quilt and mattress protector blood stained, furniture old and grubby, no dusting done whatsoever, even a previous guest's pyjama bottoms left behind a door! No customer service skills at all, or pleasantries like welcomes, etc. We were horrified at the price - ludicrously sky high - nearly $500 for 2 nights. We discovered a "premium" had been added to the price as it was a full weekend for Taupo with the cycle challenge. We found out that we could've got a beautiful modern room (with spa) elsewhere for much less. We met other people (from overseas) who were just as disgusted with their unit. Overall, a tired, dirty, unmaintained place - yet in a prime location. Why people like this are in the industry we'll never know. Tip for management: watch the UK series "Hotel Inspector".

  • Disliked — Filthy, unmaintained, shabby, unwelcoming, expensive

Thanks to those whose comments have been found helpful in bringing the standards back up after there has been a change in management , cleaners and staff supervision to bring you clean and comfortable accommodation. I have just had over a month with new staff and have had plenty of positive responses and no negative ones to tarriffs from $220 for full family down to $95 depending on demand.

I recently stayed at this motel that was completely awful. We were quoted $130 per night for a small, crappy room that looked like it hadn't been cleaned properly and their so called facilities (which included a heated indoor swimming pool, spa, sauna and BBQ) could not be used because they were filthy and had mould growing on them!
Oh and the lady at reception was also extremely unhelpful! Her customer service skills were so bad.
Since then the Taupo District Council actually went in and did an inspection under the Health Act and have today got back to me to let me know that they've shut the facilities down (including the swimming pool!) until it is being run in accordance to the Water Safety guidelines. The words used by the Health Inspector were...."filthy, offensive, putrid & injurious to health!"

The only positive about the Sahara is it is located across from the lake and within easy walking distance of the shops and cafes. The accommodation itself is very disappointing. The furniture is shabby, stained and out-dated and the bed linen and covers inadequate. The motel itself is badly in need of a total refubishment as walls and ceilings are mildewed, wall paper hanging off and although a coat of paint has been slapped on the bathroom this is transparent and sloppy. The overall cleanliness is poor.
The Motel advertises a heated indoor swimming pool ( this was the reason we selected the Motel) together with a number of tourists we arrived at the pool only to leave immediately as it was cold.
As a New Zealander I feel embarrassed that such accommodation is being used by tourists and the impression they must be left with about New Zealand.
I have stayed at many Motels around New Zealand and would rate this as the worst.

Not recommended. Excellent location next to Lake Taupo and close to town, but basically I felt we got budget accommodation at a premium price.

Management might need training or replacing. It was hard to make a reservation in the first place and when we arrived they had no record of it! All off-street parking had been taken so we had to park on the street. We thought the motel had cut too many corners to cut costs, with much deferred maintenance in the unit and only "a lick and a promise" for cleaning. In addition they must have sold the room twice: at 10pm another couple entered our room with a key!

We were astonished on check-out to be charged NZ$160 for one night - that's about 60% more than competitor rates in New Zealand. Management simply dismissed our concerns - no explanation or apologies.
