“Is it actually a B & B?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2010

Was refered to this B & B by the helpful people at Tauranga i-site for three nights in May 2010. Maybe we were a bit spoilt because we had previously stayed at an amazing B & B in Thames, but we were disappointed by Taiparoro mansion.

On the up side the location is good and the building is a wonderful old building well converted to hosting guests. The manager Memphis has made some wonderful art and the place is well decorated, much nicer than some of the bland places we have stayed at before.

On the down side the I thought Tiaparoro mansion was expensive for what it was. (The most expensive place we stayed at in a 9 night holiday). The ensuite bathrooms were very small. Memphis was around occasionally but not really what you would expect. For a B & B the breakfast was poor. "Serve your own" instant coffee and Kellog's Just right cereal is not what I would expect for the price. On the first day we were told where to "do our guest dishes" so we did our own. Happy to do this in a Motel where there is a kitchenette in the room but in a B & B?! It was weird! Maybe this is actually a guest house and we were 'mis-informed' and overcharged?

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Taiparoro House is a boutique-style private guesthouse located in the heart of Tauranga city, an easy ten minute walk from the city centre. Overlooking Tauranga harbour, in a quiet residential street, it is one of the few remaining heritage properties in the Tauranga area. Taiparoro was built in 1882 in a traditional Victorian villa style and is a Category II heritage listed building with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Over the years Taiparoro has been lovingly maintained, and restored. It has been specifically designed as guest accommodation with five bedrooms including a harbour view suite, all with ensuite bathrooms, and although it still maintains many of its beautiful period features, it has been updated to a high standard with a more modern contemporary theme and furnishings. ... more   less
