“Ditched the kids... what a great idea!!”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

We spent 1 night at Ohtel taking advantage of their "Ditch the Kids" deal to celebrate our babymoon. We were not disappointed by any aspect of our stay: large, comfortable bed; huge bath tub; helpful and unobtrusive staff; decent sound proofing in room; leisurely breakfast with a range of choices. We live in Wellington and had planned what we wanted to see and do in our child free 24 hours so didn't need to take advantage of the staff recommendations or guest services. I'm confident that I would have been happy with any of the restaurant recommendations provided if we'd needed one; we had a long conversation with one staff member about the food scene in Wellington and were able to update her on a newly opened restaurant we ate in that night.

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing our home town from a visitors perspective (we don't stay in hotels often so this was a real treat) and Ohtel's location is ideal. I have recommended Ohtel to several friends already and will return for a child free night again in the future.

Room Tip: rooms at the back might be quieter as not facing the road. We had a deluxe room (no. 8) as part of...

Hi Eleanor,

Locals who take up our offer often comment on the different experience they have of their own city as a leisure tourist. Wellington is such a great place to wonder around and enjoy, we don't always get to see it in that light as daily life is all consuming...

Thanks for your review - see you for babyversary two !!

Ohtel is a lovely hotel with modern decor in an older building. The lift is old and rickety, but this only added to the charm. My room had a balcony that looked out over the bay. There is a supermarket just across the road and it is a stones throw from the Embassy and a short walk from most of Wellington.

Ohtel is a cute boutique hotel located near Waitangi Park in Wellington, NZ. There is tasteful decor with a twist of Kiwi, Pacifica, retro furniture, mod cons and comfortable. We showered in an en suite bathroom with a wonderful picture of the Moeraki boulders. Breakfast downstairs was like being in a tiny cafe that is probably very cosy to linger in on those more than brisk days. Coffee orders immediately, low key help yourself (yay! grainy bread to toast with nice jams etc) and a couple of poached eggs quickly brought to the table. Ohtel folks are helpful, capable, interested and smile. Walk to Te Papa Tongarewa the national museum is 2 minutes across Waitangi park (farmers market on a Sunday revealed tasty treats and a nice vibe).

Thanks for your review LL,

Although our buffet breakfast isn't huge, everything we provide is fresh and locally sourced or made by high end businesses like Gernot's Jams of Hawkes Bay.

Please send us an email prior to arrival if you are looking for suggestions on what to do during your visit - we can usually recommend a couple of emerging gems you may not have heard about...

I am not so sure what all the fuss is about on trip advisor. I thought the property looked a little tired to be honest In both the main public areas and the rooms Our friends travelling with us were of the same option We did not like the open bathroom altough this area was very spacious The ironing board in the cupboard was a nightmare to use The beds were comfortable altough tricky for the elderly to get in and out of with there wide brim Quite a bit of clutter in the room and I guess you have to be a fan of retro Being a travel agent I travel a lot and see an lot of hotel rooms and I guess this one was just not for me and you can do better in Wellington for the price However I can read that others are happy with Ohtel

Hi Denise,

You are right, Ohtel is not for everyone - some prefer a standard room with not too many surprises. But if you want to stay in a small, thoughtfully appointed, owner run property in a great location with friendly staff, free Wi-Fi and much more, please give us a try.

We are certainly not the cheapest, but I'm confident we offer comparatively great value for money.

Merry Xmas everyone !

We enjoyed our 3 night stay, the room is large and the bath was excellent. We had a balcony which looks over the bay of Wellington. Only down side is the hotel is on a rather busy road so if noise from traffic bothers you don't stay here, but in saying that the double glazing does reduce the noise if you keep the sliding doors shut. It is a great location to walk to most of Wellington and a supermarket is nearby if you need one. There are also plenty of restaurants within a short walk.

Hi Henry,

Sounds like you 'got' Ohtel and Wellington; location, coffee, Oriental Parade etc...

Glad you had a good time relaxing in one of our baths, and yes our mini-bar items are priced to be consumed !

What a lovely hotel and in a great location on the Wellington waterfront. The staff are very friendly with great service! The room was massive and would be a great for a longer stay. Sitting outside to catch the setting sun drinking one of NZ great craft beers was a real pleasure.

Hi Andrew,

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay - and more importantly were able to stay hydrated !

Next time you are in town try 'Goldings' in Leeds Street for a fantastic array of craft beers...

We found this hotel at the last minute using trip advisor and did the booking through trip advisor. Everything was as advertised. Nice room and bath (we enjoyed the soaking tub). The minibar was well stocked with fixings for a wide variety of cocktails (the most reasonable hotel minibar prices I have ever seen). The owner or his staff are very attentive, can whip up a nice cup of coffee. The breakfast was good. The location can't be beat, on Oriental Parade, very easy to get to coming off of SH 1

They steered us to a nice restaurant for dinner.

All in all, a very nice place.
