Owner description: The Weta Cave is your gateway to two incredible film-making experiences in Wellington, New Zealand. From Lord of the Rings to Avatar: our Weta Cave Workshop Tour reveals how me make the props, costumes, creatures and models from your favourite films. Catch a glimpse of artists at work on our tour stage and peek through windows that look directly into the workshop itself! Ever wanted to visit a real shooting stage? Blast off on our Miniatures Stage Tour to see the unbelievable Weta Workshop models and miniatures built for the popular TV series, Thunderbirds Are Go! A cavern of creativity, the Weta Cave shop also boasts collectibles designed by the artists at Weta Workshop, prop replicas, apparel, jewellery, books and more. While you’re here, take a seat for a free film about the history of film-making on the Miramar Peninsula. It screens throughout the day.

If you are in Wellington, and you are a Sci-Fi nerd, you have to check this place out.

Weta makes props and does effects for a number of various big hollywood studios. The little shop that they have in the front is staffed by people that work in the back of the house making stuff, so they are very knowledgeable about the process and whatnot. It is also really cool to see so many of the props up close and personal.

I would recommend taking the tour, I'm kind of kicking myself for not doing it, because I doubt I will have another chance to do it anytime soon. Also, check out the little movie they have playing in the room off to the side, it's free and very interesting.

Great tour through the workshop - it's frat that they actually use people who work on the movies becuase it gives you that inside knowledge. Very engaging tour. Definitely recommend to do this especially if you love the hobbit or lord of the rings!

The Weta Cave was a lot of fun. It was small, but so informative! We loved looking at all the memorabilia they sold, and took pictures with Gandalf and the trolls. The tour Window into the Workshop was really interesting because we got to see how they develop and make props and costumes for movies. Really creative and innovative stuff. We even got to touch and wield a bunch of armour and weapons. It's just amazing the things they come up with! I'd totally recommend coming here and going for the tour.

We bought a Lord of the Rings filming locations around New Zealand book and a Middle Earth New Zealand map. Very cool!

The Weta Workshop is located a bit outside of Welli - on the Miramar Peninsula, but if you have a car and are interested in design or the Lord of the Rings you should definitely visit.

Outside the workshop you can take pictures with incredibly detailed trolls from the Hobbit Movie and you can buy a lot of fan-stuff at the shop. Prices are ok,(approx 1h Tour for adults is 20$) the staff is nice and actually works there (designing stuff), you get to see a lot of weapons, armour and people at work and a lot of background information on the process every design has to go through.

4 Stars because it is not allowed to take photos inside and also because I expected to see more props apart from weapons and armour.

Easily caught the bus from Wellington centre there and back. Laid back approach where you could take photos in the shop and mini-museum. Enjoyable short film and visit around incredible workshops with knowledgable guide that works in one of the departments. Never knew you could do so much with paint! Great little cafe nearby for lunch and drinks.
