Owner description: The Weta Cave is your gateway to two incredible film-making experiences in Wellington, New Zealand. From Lord of the Rings to Avatar: our Weta Cave Workshop Tour reveals how me make the props, costumes, creatures and models from your favourite films. Catch a glimpse of artists at work on our tour stage and peek through windows that look directly into the workshop itself! Ever wanted to visit a real shooting stage? Blast off on our Miniatures Stage Tour to see the unbelievable Weta Workshop models and miniatures built for the popular TV series, Thunderbirds Are Go! A cavern of creativity, the Weta Cave shop also boasts collectibles designed by the artists at Weta Workshop, prop replicas, apparel, jewellery, books and more. While you’re here, take a seat for a free film about the history of film-making on the Miramar Peninsula. It screens throughout the day.

Whow we are up there. What an awesome place. They have been around since 1987 doing movies that you would not believe; and of course what they are well known for in lord of the rings and the hobbit. And at present they are involved with thunderbirds. A must see if you are in Wellington.
I would like to see more though. There are so many areas weta are involved with that to get to see only a very small piece is sad. I want more.

We did the half hour tour of the workshop yesterday- and spent an hour. Warren a hair and makeup stylist was our tour guide. He was wonderful, the tour was super interesting, we got to look at and touch loads of props and that was really cool. Sir Richard Taylor even popped through the studio and put on a mask and scared the living daylights out of us all. Wonderful, excellent, interesting, insightful. The guy with the long beard behind the counter was super interesting, everyone is really into their jobs and it shows. AWESOME. under 5s are free and kids 10, adults 20 dollars and really worth it.

We went to the Weta Cave and behind the scenes studio tour with family over from England - a group of 7 of us altogether. We had been to the Cave and the little cinema presentation before and loved it, but this time we did the studio tour as well (booked in advance though, which you really must do - even a couple of days in advance should be enough - when we arrived for our 1pm tour, the afternoon tours were booked out til 5pm, though I noticed a couple of visitors got "cancellation' tickets for a tour at 2.30 which was good)... Can't rave enough about the studio tour (only $20pp, or family ticket $50) - one of our party had never seen any of the films Weta had been involved in (I know, right...there are still people in the world who haven't!) but she still loved it. Another of our party was an LOTR "extra" - typical Wellington thing. There is something really amazing, cool, real, very Kiwi about getting into the workshop area with one of the Weta team as tour guide (ours was an effects artist - a painter) and hearing some of the stories behind the making of District Nine, or LOTR or the Hobbit, etc, seeing the props (even lifting or wearing some of the materials), hearing about how they are made - feeling very proud that Sir Richard Taylor and Sir Peter Jackson are Kiwis, and have stayed right here in Wellington to influence and lift the game for filmmaking globally... The Cave Trolls outside the Cave are a great photo opportunity - all in all a MUST for your Wellington trip. Afterwards took our guests along the road to the cafe on the corner (The Larder) for a beautiful late lunch and then straight to the plane bound for home. It was a great little immersion in something that is uniquely Wellington that they will rave about back at Uni and school in England.

Finding ourselves in Wellington with a few hours to spare wee visited Weta Cave. Not being a huge Lord of the Rings fan expectations were low. The museum is small and you have to be a real fan of the movies I guess. We missed out on seeing the free movie about Weta (couple minutes too late) but got on the next tour within 20 minutes and that was really worthwhile. Our guide was funny and very informative, thanks Mark! Learnt so much about the world of special effects. Felt an adult ticket at $20.00 quite reasonable.

I visited Weta Cave and Workshop with a LOTR Rover tour in July and I absolutely loved it! As a total film fanatic and LOTR geek this was everything I hoped it would be able more! The workshop tour is absolutely worth the admission price, to have the opportunity to hear from someone who works in the industry and the workshop was wonderful and so very insightful. I consider myself a bit of a nerd when it comes to props but I learnt tons of new things! Would definitely recommend to like minded folks.
