Travelled from Auckland to Wellington on this service. What an education. The commentary was well timed and very informative. Who knew our country had so much history and geology...The staff were lovely and very professional. Would totally recommend this to any one - local or visitor!! The food on board was very reasonably priced, although they don't mind if you take on your own food and drink (just no alcohol to be taken on board - you can buy it on board though...)

Travelled on the Northern Explorer from Palmerston North to Papakura. I enjoyed every minute of the trip. The train is superb, the seats comfortable, the views amazing and the staff exceptional. The food was good and the staff went out of their way to be obliging and friendly. I would use the service again even though the cost was higher than a cheap flight. You really felt relaxed and able to revel in the privilege of viewing our amazing countryside in comfort.

I loved every minute of this train journey, I travelled from Parapaurumu to Auckland and through the beautiful North Island. The food and drink are very reasonably priced and if you can get a €99 seat for a one way journey so is the train journey! The wine is particularly good and local. The viewing carriage is great as you can experience the smells of the forest and sea air as well as the scenery. My seat was comfy and with plenty of room, I really would recommend it as an alternative to flying if you have the time to spare, it takes around 9 hours but with such wonderful scenery the time flies!!

As a kiwi I didn't get as much out of it as a new tourist would. My American wife was with me and enjoyed it. It's a fun and slightly different way to travel whilst enjoying the scenery. It does take about 11 hours though so you need to be in the mood to sit back chill and enjoy. Food service on board was good as was the service in general. The lady in charge of seating was very accommodating in changing our seats, on what was a pretty full service, to a better location. Coming around the bays of Wellington as the sun set was beautiful as was the national park area and the Rimutaka spiral is cool as is gong over the viaducts but there is otherwise a whole lot of "countryside". My only complaint is that the train arrived almost an hour late and there was no indication or announcement at any point that we were running late. It turned 10 hours in to 11 and meant those that had people waiting for them in Wellington would not have been able to warn them. A simple announcement or two would have helped! Also it should have been a lot clearer a lot sooner that there was a commentary available via the headphones and how that all worked. Not cheap but worth it in my view.
