“comfortable rooms, excellent in house restaurant”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

Myself and a friend needed to book in somewhere overnight in Wellington to catch a morning flight out of Wellington international.
After looking at various websites I booked via the Bay Plazas own website for a Twin room, 2 course dinner for 2 and full Continental breakfast for two package for $190. After reading reviews of here wasn't expecting a grandplace but a comfortable base. Was pleasantly surprised. While yes the rooms are old, still has an old tv and tiled bathroom but new shower head, new bedding and very clean. excellent view of Te papa and water front.

Most of your basics are hidden ie jug is hidden in the wardrobe with a good range of drinks tea, coffee, hot chocolate, decaf coffee, lemon tea, sugar. the note with these was rather confusing saying to contact reception for fresh milk. We did eventually find the mini bar with uth milk (fridge was hidden in a cupboard under the tv) the mini bar had a small range of items to select from.

Parking was $18 a day and at the back of the hotel a plan simple car park reasonably well lit

By far the dinner was the most exemplary part of our stay we were given the option of main and either or of entree or desert.
We had steak and fish of the day mains and chocolate cake and banana bread and butter pudding
All was Delicious!! would highly recommend
The continental breakfast was excellent 3 x help yourself fruit juices, fresh fruit, cereals, toast. The cooked breakfast was ok bacon was cheap and dry, eggs were bland and not free range but ok.
nice decor but does over look the road and new world supermarket.

Staff were attentive and pleasant in both reception and restaurant

be aware there is a $100 deposit to cover parking, drinks in bar etc that you get the balance back on check out

Negatives
the fridge randomly buzzs- is by beds
room overheated no way to control
the tv remote was dodgy
jug is too big for bathroom sink
some rough around the edges and walls, light switches
key lock

but the positives out way the negatives and have recommend to others! I will be back soon

Room Tip: room at front of hotel with good viewa

Thank you for your excellent feedback with regard to your recent stay at the Bay Plaza Hotel. The City Escape Package is a great price for the dinner, bed and breakfast inclusion. We are fortunate to have a great chef, who enjoys producing great quality food.
We are small team at the Bay Plaza Hotel and strive to provide 5* service and it is good to read you received this on your stay.
Our central location is a bonus for a stay in the central, and we hope to welcome you again when you next visit Wellington.

Good point of this hotel is the location as you are close to everything. Reasonable price but the rooms are very dated with tired looking bathrooms and an old TV. Little noisy at times as we were looking down on the Fire Station but nice views of the city.

Thanks for your comments. We are a mid-range - value for money accommodation option in the central city, with fantastic views. Your comments have been noted regarding the TV and we are in the process of updating these at the moment. We look forward to welcoming you back to Bay Plaza Hotel when you next visit Wellington.

We stayed at the Bay Plaza Hotel after spending the day at various Wellington Universities for their Open Days. By the time we got to our room around 7pm we were looking forward to a quiet night in front of the television just resting after walking all over the town. We'd booked our room via Hotwire and the deal was worth the money. The Bay Plaza is easy to find and the Receptionist who checked us in was really friendly and helpful. The hotel lobby is modern looking and welcoming. I agree with some of the other reviews the rooms are a little tired and in need of a bit of refurbishment but were clean, warm, and adequate. The view from our room was stunning looking down towards Oriental Parade and out across the Harbour. The tea and coffee facilities in the room were just what we needed both for a nice cuppa before bed and again when we woke. We ordered a local paper that was delivered to outside our room in the morning. There are alot of hotels to choose from in Wellington I liked this one because it was close to Te Papa Museum which is a must visit, and near the main shopping district. It was a short walk from the bus stops in Manners Street along Courtenay Place and then onto Oriental Parade to the Bay Plaza. Just across the road is a supermarket which is really handy. We caught the airport bus to and from the city and buses were easy to hop and off to get us from one end of town to the other. Yes I would recommend this hotel and I would stay here again if looking for a good rate and a safe and adequate venue.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Harbour - you won't regret the picturesque night lights or the...

Stayed here as part of the Kirra Tour. Friendly welcome from the staff. Hotel is close to the new world supermarket and has great views of Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand. Room was reasonable and clean but a little old (the TV was old). Very short walk to Te Papa which was pretty good. Dinner was three courses and quite nice (friendly staff) and included potato and leek soup, chicken and berry crumble. Would probably stay here again, as i would have loved to spend at least another day in this city (only had one night and half a day here).

Great to read you enjoyed your stay, while touring NZ on your Kirra Coach Trip. We all agree Wellington deserves more time for this style of holiday, as we do have a great city and our location is close to all the attractions, and currently you don't have enough time to enjoy the city. Good to see you enjoy your evening meal, we are fortunate to have a great chef and team at the Bay Plaza Hotel.

Bay Plaza - great value for the money - Reception staff were very friendly & efficient - nothing too much problem for them. Room was very nice & clean - wooden furniture needing a spruce up but all very clean & polished. Obviously new curtains, drapes & bedspreads in the room. A newer & bigger TV would have been nice but the existing one worked so that's all that matters. Heating great - no electric blanket but wasn't needed. Great view from the 7th floor & very close to everything - particularly New World opposite. I didn't use the dining room so cannot comment on the food provided. It was easy to find your way round - not a rabblt warren like some Hotels can be - all in all- I enjoyed my stay there & would certainly go there again.

In my opinion, this is the best value for money for a hotel in this mid range in Wellington. My husband and I stayed there last weekend. The rooms are a good size , light and simple decor and if you stay on the city side, lovely view and the afternoon sun beaming in. Opposite is a main supermarket and a very short walk to downtown, in fact on its doorstep, with cinemas, restaurants, museums , cafes, and lovely Oriental Parade and beach around the corner. Staff friendly and on site parking for reasonable cost.

Room Tip: Higher rooms less noise and rooms facing out to city get afternoon sun

Great hotel right where you want to be for wandering along the wharves and round Oriental Parade. Buffet is a good price and delicious and breakfast quite stunning and excellent value.
So central but many rooms have harbour views. You can walk everywhere from here.
I travel a lot, and was very pleased with my own home town bargain.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view.
