“Terrible”
Reviewed 28 November 2013 via mobile

My standards when it comes to hotels are very low. But I am lying in my room now and have just signed up to trip advisor to express the disgust I have in this hotel. I have now had 2 disappointing dinners in a row. The first was a "decent stack of ribs" where I got served 4 very small ribs. Tonight I was served a ham and pineapple pizza that smelt and tasted so sweet I couldn't even finish it. I didn't know it was possible to mess up a ham and pineapple pizza. When I sent back the pizza I was told by the chef there was nothing wrong with the quality of the pizza. The service in the restaurant and bar is terrible and invasive at first then drops off to nothing. The rooms smell and seriously lack ventilation. The two good things about this place are the aioli and the tuatara beer. This is an overpriced and dated hotel with an absolutely terrible restaurant. It's do far away from anything you can't even go eat anywhere else.

Dear plmarsh,

Firstly thank you for your comments and apologies that the level of service and quality of food did not meet your expectations. We do get quite good feedback about the hotel restaurant from a lot of our guests that stay in many hotels and dine at many restaurants around the country. I am unsure why the food and service was not up to the usual standard and I will address these concerns with the relevant persons. Certainly the situation could have been handled better.

With regards to the room I am unaware of the smell referred to but certainly this could have been addressed or we could have offered a room move. Reading about lack of ventilation I find a little surprising as all rooms have opening windows.

In reference to your comments about being overpriced, the hotel recently has been ranked by consumer sentiment as being the best value hotel in Wellington. The day of travel and the week of travel is one of the busiest of the year and travelling on such days will attract a premium but is not to dissimilar to hotels in this star range.

Finally while the hotel is not in the middle of the CBD, there is a range of at least four pubs and six restaurants within a five minute stroll. So I think this comment is a little unreasonable and I am sure that the hotel staff could have directed you to one of these establishments if requested.
Plmarsh I apologise again and as a guesture of goodwill I am happy to buy you dinner at the hotel next time you come to Wellington.

Dear Nancy705,

Thank you for your submission on Tripadvisor. Certainly the restaurant was quite busy on the day you dined and we are glad that the team in the kitchen and the waitstaff were able to provide a good product and service.

I would also like to thank you for your comments about AJ. The hotel appreciates his efforts but it is very pleasing when guests do a well.

Thank you again

We stayed here for two nights in October and it was ideal for our needs. The room and bathroom were both of a good size, although the shower was a bit cramped. The decor was in good condition and very clean.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the station and the main shopping area and 5 minutes from Parliament Buildings. A block away are number of places where you can get a good breakfast, although we found they were late opening on weekends. Unfortunately, there were very few restaurants close to the hotel.
The hotel bar has a happy hour every evening with good value drinks and nibbles.

Dear 2Elk,

Thank you for your recent feedback about Kingsgate Hotel Wellington on Tripadvisor.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay and found the room to your satisfaction.
I note your comments about the lack of restaurants in the area. While there are not as many
restaurants as in the middle of the CBD, there are a couple down the road on Murphy St as well as a number in Tinakori Village.

We hope to see you again in the near future and I am happy to assist with any dining requirements on your next visit.

I recently was attending a show in Wellington so decided to spend the night in the city.

We booked and stayed at the Kingsgate Hotel.

This is easily found and has off street parking at a very reasonable rate. The room even though some over look the motor are quiet.

The beds are comfortable.

The restaurant is very nice. I was able to get dessert before we went out as they would be closed when we returned. This we stored in our room fridge until we returned. The staff were very accommodating.

Breakfast the next morning was wonderful. A great selection to chose from.

Having read their evening menu I would even dine their if we were back in the city... sounds so appetizing.

This hotel is not expensive but is great.

It is in walking distance to the botanical gardens , Old St Pauls , the new Cathedral and Parliament.

Room Tip: Stayed in 702 . View of St Marys and is quiet.

We stayed for on night at the Kingsgate Hotel in Wellington. For the price of the room we were not impressed. When we got checked in we were given our room key and there was no telling us where we were to find our room, I expected to be told what floor our room was on at the very least. When we entered our room we discovered we had been given a double bed when in fact we had asked for twin. When house keeping come up to the room we found her quite rude. She basically threw our bags into the corner and then said to us it wasn't her fault that this had happened with the beds. Thought for the price and having restaurants on site that room service would go past 9.30pm.

Dear Happi3,

Thank you for your recent feedback on Tripadvisor. It appears on a number of levels there has been communications breakdown. I apologise for this as it is certainly not the normally level of service that we provide. If you can let me know when you are next coming to Wellington, I will personally ensure that you have a great stay.

We stayed for 3 days 3-5 Oct. Location of hotel is OK just in a government office neighborhood with no facilities. The hotel is dated, Decor and colours are from the eighties, Cleaning of bathrooms was poor. Ventilation of the rooms is non-existent unless one opens the windows and has to put up with the wind howling thru. All windows are dirty giving the place a neglected image. Lifts and entry lobby badly in need of redesign. Why charge for internet, Wifi is standard included in most overseas hotel. Also why charge for parking which is also usually provided as part of the room.

Dear Ad T,

Thank you for your recent feedback. I apologise that not everything was up to the standard required. I will certainly be reviewing your comments with the management team in the near future and will have them review their procedures.

With regards to internet charges we do offer complimentary access in the restaurant and bar and we will again review the charging of internet in the guest rooms along with parking in the near future.

The Kingsgate Hotel in Wellington is starting to show its age. The staff are very good but unfortunately the hotel needs some work to bring it up to a satisfactory standard. The standard of the meals left a little to be desired.

Room Tip: Corner rooms can be noisy when the wind is blowing.
