Mercure Wellington Central City Hotel and Apartments
Ranked #28 of 46 Hotels in Wellington
Reviewed 10 October 2013

We stayed three nights at room 1601 in Grand Mercure Central Apartments and we found our stay very pleasant. The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful from the moment we stepped into the hotel, just fantastic. Through out our stay they helped us with recommendations for restaurants and such, and we enjoyed their recommendations. Our room in the 16 floor was very good, clean, neat and nicely furnished. It has many amenities like a fridge, microwave, kitchenwares, iron, etc. One thing was missing though which is a safe box. The bathroom is good as well, and it has its own small electrical heater which was great. The shower pressure is excellent and hot water was plenty. The internet is not free, but they have some cheap plans.
Wellington is a windy city, and we experienced that first hand in our second night when we could not sleep from all the wind and rattle, of course I realize I can't but them at fault for nature, but that really effected the quality of our sleep in that night, but of all fairness, the first and third night were so peaceful and quiet.
I would say Grand Mercure Apartments has many things going for it in terms of location, service, and even price, and that's why I would not hesitate to recommend it to other visitors of Wellington.

First of all, I'll have to say that I love the location. It is pretty much in central wellington, just walking distance from eateries and courtney place.

The reception service was good and I was placed on the highest floor - room 1601 which was excellent as I didn't want to be bothered by outside noise. The room was great, though i suspect that the opposite side would have the great harbour views.

I think a lot of travellers would find this hotel/apt of average quality - I would definitely agree to the common remark of "a bit tired but good value".

There are a number of not-so-great things about the place:

1. Mattress was too soft. Also, two single beds were combined to make a double bed in the room I was in, quite noticeable as the centre of the mattress sinks in. Not comfortable.

2. Ventilator in the bathroom is noisy and take about 10-15 mins to quieten down after the light switch is shut off. Time for an upgrade.

3. TV reception was blurry at times (faulty connection)? The excuse given by the receptionist was that the recent storm caused it. Shouldn't take too long to fix, should it??

Overall, adequate, clean and not too expensive - you'd be getting good value if you're paying under $100 a night.

Room Tip: Ask for the 16th floor. I stayed at 1601 which was great, though i suspect that the opposite side wo...

I recently stayed for 2 nights at Grand Mercure while in Wellington for work on 5th floor. Positives were it was well-facilitated with kettle/toaster/microwave, central location, and had a large comfortable bed, though the room was very compact. Niggles were bad reception on the TV, and a noisy fan heater; though warm it would keep switching off//on every 2-3 minutes with thermostat, and a musty smell in corridor.

The 2nd night however was not good; a pub next door? had a party/live band playing until 3am which meant sleep was impossible. I advised the reception about 1am, as well as the fact that a portion of the room carpet was soaking by the window from a leak (which he noted). He mentioned a pub was next door but I don't think he realised how noisy it was as it couldn't be heard/away from the reception.Party noise if by-far the last thing I want when staying away for work, and I certainly don' t expect this from a business-oriented hotel especially for the price.

I mentioned the leak again in the morning when I checked out, I was told that it would be looked at, with no other information being provided, gratitude to point it out or apology, or questions about my stay.

Good position and very good value at $125 a night for the 2 of us right in the CBD. Room was clean but in need of a little attention, and it was frustrating that the rooms equipment was not checked, eg only one spoon, and one breakfast bowl. The inclusion of a small kitchenette was a real bonus.

Far below the standard I expected from a Grand Mercure, as that brand usually means a superior experience, but acceptable and convenient.

Room Tip: if you value one, ask for a room with a kitchenette. There is a supermarket 5 mins walk away.

We were very disappointed. We arrived late on a Monday afternoon to find only person on duty. In a quite 'take-it-or-leave' fashion we were told that we would have to find our own way with respect to car parking. Not a great reception when you had just found yourself into a city for the very first time at the end of a day's travelling. When we eventually got into our room it was so small we could not lay out our cases. On asking for case supports we were told that none were available. Lights did not work, and were eventually given a tatty bedside lamp as a make-do until the following morning. The room itself could not have been more basic, and showed signs of wear. The Receptionist clearly had no support and a tired hotel to take care of.

So don't be fooled by this apartment lable for a standard room. It is a small hotel room.

We decided to upgrade to get something with enough room to swing a cat and with some basic hospitality fit out. This proved to be a two room apartment with everything workable. Again, a bit basic, and with a worn look, but good enough. Good shower.

We eventually spoke to the manager about our disgruntlement, and we were given our upgrade for nothing as compensation for the way we were treated, so it sort of worked itself out. Reception staff, in as far as we needed them were fine after the initial encounter.

All rather ironic given the large poster in the foyer espousing the Accor philosophy of hospitality and high standards. Staff should be given more support, the hotel freshened up, and room facilities made adequate.

We would recommend that you only use this if you are prepared to upgrade to what is actually an apartment, or only in Wellington for a short time with minimum luggage. It is a convenient location.

Room Tip: Take the apartment option if you are more than one person or staying for more than one night.

We stayed 2 nights on 2nd floor. Room was warm, bed comfortable. Tiny kitchenette, but really had no intention of self catering. Nicely decorated. Comfy sofa. Bathroom could do with a bit of extra cleaning attention.. A bit of mould/grime in the seals etc in the shower.. The drain in the floor of the bathroom was filled with what looked like sweepings... So this could be cleaned. Front desk lady on check in was very pleasant and phoned me when room was available to check in as we arrived at 8am and went out and about for a few hours. We checked out at 6.15am. Our pre booked taxi driver advised us that the front desk staff told him we had already left but he waited anyway... Not sure how this mixup had occurred...a little disconcerting. All in all a good place to stay
