Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

First of all the cafe is great, we were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. This place is how NZ would have been, if humans hadn't introduced weasels, rats, mice, cats etc. There is a perimeter fence which means the predators can't get in but the birds can get out, however they prefer to stay within the perimeter - I wonder why! There are fantastic sounds generated from the wildlife. The signage of the tracks was a little confusing but we still had a fab time. Go and support this.

Wellington was another port during our New Zealand cruise and as we'd been there before and checked out the city, we were looking for something different. Deciding to ride the popular Cable Car again, it was here at it's entrance we were greeted by a tourism representative who gave us brochures about what to see/do and it was he who recommended a visit to Zealandia. There was a free shuttle bus to it when you got off at the top Cable Car station.

What we found was an oasis right in the city! Beautiful flora and fauna and running streams and a lake. There were walking tracks, a suspension bridge, an observation tower to climb and even a disused goldmine! It was so peaceful and green and we easily spent a couple of hours immersed in the natural surroundings. Our only regret was that we couldn't be there at night to see the kiwis come out.

Well and truly worth a visit and you will marvel at the ingenious fence surrounding the sanctuary they built to keep vermin and feral pests out.

If you are a nature lover, you will love Zealandia. This is one of the most beautiful, scenic, experiences in Wellington. Lots of walking trails, spectacular nature viewing, birds all over the place. It is a must-see activity in Wellington. This is a well kept place and a very worthwhile experience. It is wonderful to have a sanctuary for wildlife here.

We enjoyed the whole experience - learnt a lot about early New Zealand wildlife (long ago there were crocodiles here!) and then had a wonderful walk and saw so many birds. A very well spent morning culminated in a very nice lunch in the cafe.

We had a great afternoon here bringing friends from out of town. We attended the walking tour and had a very knowledgeable guide. We enjoyed the birds feeding and had an educational experience. This was also a great opportunity to get good photos. I've been here before & thought it was expensive for what it was so was delighted to see the fees discounted.
