Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

“Delightful walk”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

At the entrance there is a cafe to enjoy before or after the walk. Also need to make sure you have abit of water to take if it is a warm day.
Seeing wetas, various birdlife and a variety of small animlas within the park is wonderful.
Don't forget to collect a souvenir at the end!

“My favourite thing in all of New Zealand”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

This place has no shortage of good reviews so feel another one is a bit redundant. I just want to say that if you’re travelling to this part of New Zealand, DON’T MISS ZEALANDIA. My husband and I spent the whole day here when our cruise ship docked in Wellington for the day. I hope every local from Wellington is a member of this fantastic sanctuary. Keep up the amazing work.

Just as a side note, if you are an animal lover, you may find the exhibition part of the sanctuary a little upsetting given the information provided about the horrific practices that led to the extinction or endangerment of many of New Zealand’s animals. This is an important and necessary exhibition of course, but expect to be upset by the end of it. I recommend viewing the exhibition before going on to see the sanctuary so that you end your trip with a positive experience.

“Every visitor to Wellington should come here”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

We did the night time kiwi spotting trip and it was truly memorable. We spotted 3 kiwis as well as other endangered species. This place demonstrates very clearly just how fragile our ecology is. Highly recommended for both fun and education.

“Wonderful implementation of an important idea”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

Who'd pay $2.3 million dollars for a fence? People who recognise the importance of complex ecosystems, the value of preserving as much species diversity as possible, and the imperative to educate us and our children before we pass points of 'no return'. All power to them! And if you can help by having a delicious brunch as we did, and then spending several hours sitting, or walking quietly with camera and binoculars catching sight of numerous feathered friends, why wouldn't you? This has been one of the highlights of our visit to NZ, leave aside Wellington. Just don't leave it too late to book the combined package, so that you can also see the night life in Zeelandia in addition to the bolder inhabitants of the day.

“Give this place lots of time”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

First of all the cafe is great, we were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. This place is how NZ would have been, if humans hadn't introduced weasels, rats, mice, cats etc. There is a perimeter fence which means the predators can't get in but the birds can get out, however they prefer to stay within the perimeter - I wonder why! There are fantastic sounds generated from the wildlife. The signage of the tracks was a little confusing but we still had a fab time. Go and support this.
