“Fantastic Museum”

Possibly the best museum I have ever been to. Wonderfully interactive for children. Exhibits are current and interesting. Loved the WOW exhibit although it was hidden at the back

“Interactive and Fascinating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

Though Te Papa attracted some controversy over the years, it has stood the test of time for two main reasons.

The first of these is the continuing ingenuity and attractiveness of the displays in both the permanent and the shifting special exhibitions. These contain a high degree of interactivity, amuse the kids for some time, and encourage a viewer to learn rather than just passively watch and try to absorb.

The second reason is the use of space. While interiors are effectively lit and sometimes feel like a well-lit cavern, the use of staircases in the architecture give a blended M C Escher flow to the experience, with one part merging to another organically.

The exhibits on immigration and the origins of New Zealand are justly famous, and the collection is ethnographic and fascinating. For an insight into indigenous cultures, Te Papa does a fine job of 'selling' Maori culture to travellers and locals alike.

Te Papa is also a fine place for a conference - I've been to several there - because of its preponderance of different spaces to escape in breaks, and because of the equipment of its rooms.

It's certainly a cut above the standard, dusty, look-but-don't-touch museum of yore.

Amazing exhibits and a relaxing feel to this wonderful museum. We ended up spending a whole afternoon here and enjoyed the giant squid exhibition.
