“Pretty good but needs a make over”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2013

I've stayed here a few times while backpacking around and having to come back to Wellington to get elsewhere. It is located just across from the train and coach station which is perfect. The dorm rooms aren't very spacious for 6 people (no lockers but they have lockers down at reception now but you have to pay $2 for 5 hours!) and the bunk beds need replacing as they squeak so much and aren't very comfortable. The last time I stayed here just before Christmas for 2 nights was in a private twin room. You share a bathroom with the room next door, this is no big deal. The bathroom itself is a little haggard and needs a full on make over. Again, our bunk bed was the most wobbly bunk bed I have ever slept in, I honestly thought it was going to fall to pieces. Internet you get 20mb on a voucher, it's basically just for checking emails but there is the free CBD wifi outside just a little walk away for a good connection. Overall it's not bad value (they put the prices up for Christmas time as it's summer, which isn't very fair in my opinion), the kitchen is large but sometimes people don't clean up after themselves and the dining area is very spacious. Oh, it seems like every single window in every single room I stayed in at the hostel was cracked, which doesn't help with the noise from the busy road outside. 3.5 / 10.

The good. It is close to the ferry terminal and fairly central.
The bad: my private room was expensive, musty and the noise from the air conditioning units outside made sleep difficult.
The ugly: wi-fi is by voucher and is not reliable; the computers are expensive and achingly slow. While trying to upload photos the machine logged me off and deleted them. The staff were entirely indifferent and no-one seemed able to help me recover them. I was told that 'Only the owner has admin rights and he will be in at 7 tomorrow morning.' By 10 o'clock he was still a no show, so I cut my losses and checked out.

The building is pretty old, but adequate. The staff is very nice and helpful. It is close to the center (about 20 min walk) and to the main attractions. The prices at the restaurant are also very reasonable. The only problem for me was the window that being quite old allowed drought into the room

We were sorry our first night in Wellington that this wasn't available. The rooms are basic, but comfortable enough and the staff was the best 'backpacker oriented' of our month 'down-under'. They were willing to find good car rental rates, book Interislander tickets, tell you which grocery store was cheapest etc. Laundry was cheap to do here & the machines worked well. I liked the organizational structure of the kitchen, with your own 'bin' to put in the refridgerator walk-in. They didn't mind if you took your meal to your room, which was also 'homey'. The only reason for giving this an 'average' had to do with what i understand is NOT unusual: LARGE GROUPS OF SCHOOL KIDS! Of a Monday evening the halls were ringing with running feet, shouts, etc. Fairly early in the morning, same story. We were exhausted, so didn't have too much trouble sleeping through the ruckus, but it made me long for 'adult companionship'. Front desk says this is the only way large groups can come and enjoy Wellington ; c'est la vie. Given the price, and proximity, it still is someplace i'd consider staying again.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor. Doors contained some of the noise, but not when fully 'inundated'...

It was a smashing location could be none better I almost think, close to ferry port, train station, small stroll to city attractions and right near the waterfront.

Has a good bar and cafe on site along with pool tables. Also room was good and I think for a backpackers I have never shared a bathroom with less people

The location is good being close to the railway station and easy to walk to every attraction in central Wellington. Bluebridge ferry terminal across the street. Price is reasonable for all room types especially being in a city.

Facilities are average in my opinion. Rooms/bathrooms in decent shape but not great, kitchen is big but some things didn't work. Alcohol policy is annoying because the bar is overpriced (can't drink your own alcohol in public areas).

Also, the wifi situation is absurd, maybe the worst I encountered in NZ. I always find the "charge per megabyte" gimmick to be ridiculous in this day and age, but they are charging 10 cents per megabyte when you can step outside and get free wifi from the city. Note to all NZ hostels: more people will stay with you if you offer free wifi. How expensive can it really be in this day and age? I always look elsewhere if free wifi is not offered.

Great quality/price ratio. Excellent location. It is close to the train and bus stations as well as the waterfront and lots of other attractions. It is quite an old building but rooms are ok. Good for a weekend break.
