“A first Backpackers experience for me...!”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

It was an ok stay in a 6 person dorm...brought me back to being a boarder lol...The reception staff were friendly & helpful...the lift worked & the bar was also pleasant! I would stay there again...but felt it lacked 'atmosphere' & could be a lonely place, maybe that's because of the size of the building, which was obviously a large old hotel...I also thought that the 'cafe' was expensive in comparison to what i've seen...but then Wellington is the Captial..!!! The location was fine for walking around the City, the rail station & for Islander ferry departures.

didnt really like it. rooms and toilets not in a best shape. kitchen - i have seen better ones. lounge is ok with a fire place but thats not making it worth the money you pay. what i really didnt like was that the storage wasn't for free. after check out if you want to leave your bags, you need to pay 4$ for 6hrs and each time you want to open it again. we moved yout after one night to trek global. cheaper, nicer, better location.

Big old hostel, in desperate need of renovation. This looks like it was once a great place, but lack of money being spent on it has caused threadbare carpets. Tv has very old sofas , needs the owner to spend some money on it again.

We stayed in a private room for a week and were looking forward to our stay as we thought it looked a bit different to other hostels. We were a bit underwhelmed really.
It's a huge hostel over 6 floors so lacks the atmosphere of smaller places which is understandable.
The kitchen is a really good size for the amount of people. We never had any problems cooking.
They also have an on site cafe that serves food all day and it's not too expensive.
The bar is ok, free pool between certain hours and happy hour. Staff not great.
Our room was pretty dark and run down along with the bathrooms.

Basically, this would have been lovely when the Queen visited many years ago but I don't think they've done a thing to the place since then.
But it was cheap and you get what you pay for!

My friend and I stayed here two different nights. This place looks from the outside very dingy. The elevators inside were a bit nasty looking too. We had a twin room with a en-suite shower, toilet etc. Our first night the room was OK, upon returning about a week later we had a better room. One thing that bothered me was there was no shelves in the bathroom to put your shaving gear on and no soap bars. Glad we had some with us. I didn't really like the $20.00 room key deposit either. No problem getting it back, but in all my travels I've never had to do this! I don't understand why they do this and I wonder why?? What are they afraid of??? The restaurant was a nice cheap place to eat and the food was good. Great big huge kitchen to cook in if you had to, but we didn't use it. We paid about $99.00 U.S. and it was very convenient to the train station as we were using the trains, 2 minute walk. A lot of road noise at night also. Staff were very nice, and I would consider staying here again. I could understand why they had a notice up in the elevator wanting a maintenance man to work for the place. Definitely in need of some repair.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the opposite side of the Quay Road, quite noisy at night.

Traveling on train from Wellington to Auckland and had come across on ferry from Picton. Location was brilliant! Bus from Ferry terminal to Backpackers then two minutes walk to train station in morning!

Lots of food places all around including McDonalds. Had tea in their restaurant, cheap and nice enough. Lots of variety.

Had three sets of bunks for six people. Had to hire towels. Felt safe which is always a bonus. Nothing in room but bunks and a desk. Bathroom with toilet, shower and hand basin. Quite nice tiled bathroom with glass walled shower.

Would never normally stay in a backpackers with kids but for one night this was certainly adequate.

We booked this hostel due to the location and price which were both great, however I would recommend paying the extra to stay somewhere better. Admittedly we were already a bit down in the dumps from travelling and it was tipping it down with rain. The building is huge and easy to find, but we just found ourselves underwhelmed with everything - this converted hotel could be a lot nicer. The receptionist was ok, seemed a bit bored and gave us the wrong key which was awkward when trying to get in to a shared dorm. The room was ok, decent size but a bit noisy as the window didn't block any noise out and the curtains let in a lot of light. Im not sure about other rooms but ours had a private bathroom which was good. The guest kitchen is a good size but some of the cookers didn't work and the supplies were low as it was busy when we went so we found it a bit hard to cook. They have a good labelling system for the fridge though which means there's no leftover smelly food. The seating area is also big but a bit awkward as its open to the public so you find yourself not knowing where to sit. The tv room wasn't that big compared with the size of the hostel but there was a huge tv. The sofas seemed old and dirty but it was good enough to sit and watch a film with other backpackers. Probably would not stay here again but it was ok for one night.
