“As nice as a hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014

Booked into a single room for 5 nights. Very quiet and had our own little sofa area which looked arrow to the Embassy and street. kitchens were always clean. bed room was lovely (took me to the second night to work out there was heating so was freezing first night) had a little bit of a rattly window however it was very windy. Worth it for my own bit of space. Supermarket 1 min away so could pop across to get things at easy. very close to bus stop to all major places around the city.

Stayed here for a week. Really liked the hostel even though I felt it was a little expensive. There were two kitchens, games room, tv room and a reading room. Rooms were clean and I had a great view! HOWEVER, the girl at reception asked me if I wanted to become a YHA member for 40 dollars and I would have free wifi in all their hostels. As I have a couple of months travelling left, WE concluded that it was better value for me to join YHA for free Wifi then pay for it everywhere for e next five months. What she failed to mention though was that YHA members receive free wifi only in PARTICIPATING hostels! You can guess....the next YHA hostel I arrived at didn't participate so am back to paying for Wifi. I'm really annoyed as the receptionist led me to believe I would have free wifi worldwide! Someone needs to take her aside and explain the terms and conditions of being a member. It is very unfair as I would not have become a member had she not convinced me the free wifi was worldwide. Not a happy camper!!

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your review. We are really pleased you enjoyed the facilities while staying here. It is a shame that we have let you down with the information about our free WiFi for members. You are absolutely correct about our WiFi only being available in participating hostels and we are very sorry this was not made clear at the time you bought your membership.

To elaborate on this for anyone reading the review we do offer free WiFi to our members at over 30 of our hostels in New Zealand. All of the big locations are covered but some of the smaller privately managed hostels charge a small fee. More information on the offer can be viewed on our website.

Thanks again for your review Barbara. We certainly don't want any of our guests feeling mislead and we will make sure we are much clearer about this offer in future.

Kind Regards,
Kieran

If you're coming to Wellington, avoid hotels, check in tot he YHA and have just as good an experience.

I paid for a private room and didn't feel like I was in a hostel at all. Nice and central location as well. I can't speak of it highly enough

I have done a lot of travelling and stayed in many hostels but this is one of the best I have stayed in in terms of its facilities and how well run it is. It's a great base when staying in Wellington, and very close to Te Papa Museum (5 mins walk) and the shops in the city centre (10 mins walk). There is also a supermarket across the road. I stayed here for 2 nights on separate occasions - once in a dorm room and once in a twin room. The 4-bed dorm room was on the top floor with excellent views of the harbour and with ensuite. Really impressive! There was loads of space for us to spread our stuff out and we had an excellent night's sleep - beds were comfy and noise was not an issue at all, especially given the size of the hostel. The twin room was obviously a bit smaller and without ensuite, but shared bathrooms were very clean, checked regularly and even had hairdryer and straighteners for use. There was a lot of good communal space, including a lounge on the 6th floor where we were staying. The kitchens are big and have everything you need. There is plenty of space on the ground floor to sit and eat, lounge, and separate TV room and Games room with pool table. They have lockers for cheap storage of luggage, but also offer long term (one week) storage for $10. This was good for us as we were going across to South Island to do the Queen Charlotte Track before coming back again. There is loads of info on what to do in Wellington, including free activities and the staff are numerous and very helpful. Interislander ferries run a shuttle from the hostel to the ferry terminal for $3 which was so handy, and you could get buses to the airport from around the corner. The only disappointment was the bagel breakfast on offer in their tiny cafe - we didn't realise that they give you a bagel straight from the freezer that you have to toast yourself and jam, cream cheese were offered as spreads - we watched as the lady unceremoniously scooped these into drinking glasses for us to use. And we only got a paper bag - no plates.Obviously a minor issue! Coffee there was good. Would highly recommend this hostel to anyone - families, older couples as well as younger people. It caters for everyone.

Room Tip: 6th floor has good views

This hostel is huge, modern and has really helpful staff. Massive kitchen thats clean and comfortable shared areas. It's a typical YHA though in the sense that it has zero atmosphere. No one talks to each other and its very quiet.

We were absolutely amazed and impressed at the quality and comfort of this YHA. Everything was terrific including the common areas. We wished we had more time there. Even the shower was good. Only downside was that we didn't get wifi in the rooms.

I enjoyed my stay at the YHA Wellington very much. The staff were friendly and the room on the 6th floor was nice, too. The bathrooms and kitchen were always clean. It's perfectly located to explore Wellington. Most sights are in walking distance. There's a bus stop just around the corner and a big supermarket opposite to the hostel.
I'm looking forward to staying there again during my next visit to NZ.
